Apologies if this had been done before, but I haven't seen it if it has.

Anyway, let's make the ultimate list of great cover versions. Ideally with the original artists as well (for us covers fans to find out more).

No matter how famous or obscure, let's have 'em.

I'll start with a few of my favorites:-

-Ben Folds Five - 'Golden Slumbers' (The Beatles)
-Cake - 'I Will Survive' (Gloria Gaynor)
-Red Hot Chilli Peppers - 'Higher Ground' (Stevie Wonder)
-The Lemonheads - 'Different Drum' (Mike Nesmith)
-The Futureheads - 'Hounds Of Love' (Kate Bush)
-Faith No More - 'This Guy's In Love With You' (Burt Bacharach)
-Teenage Fanclub - 'Feels A Whole Lot Better' (The Byrds)

When does it stop being a cover & start being a standard??

The Doors or Jimi Hendrix or Patti Smith - Gloria (Van Morisson)
John Cale or Rufus Wainwright or Jeff Buckley - Hallelujah (Leonard Cohen)
Blue Oyster Cult - We've Gotta Get Out Of This Place (The Animals)
Peter Green's Splinter Group - All 29 of Robert Johnson's songs (Robert Johnson (Famous blues artist, born 1911, died 1938)
Eric Clapton or Free - Cross Roads Blues (Robert Johnson)
Erasure - Gimme, Gimme, Gimme A Man After Midnight (ABBA)
CCS - Whole Lotta Love (Led Zeppelin) - most often known at the Top of the Pops theme
Janis Joplin - Me and Bobby McGee (Kris Kristofferson)

There are sure to be more

Blue Monday - Flunk (New Order)

This stopped me in my tracks when I was in HMV and they played it. Had to find out who it was and buy it there and then.

Super Furry Animals - 'Y Teimlad' (Datblygu)

The original is dreadful, but the SFA version is one of the most beautiful love songs I've ever heard.

Only one springs to mind....

Beverly Knight - Angels (Robie williams)..Ok it's not been released but she performed it at the Guy Chambers thing, Radio1 broadcast it.

Never really liked the Robbie Williams original but Beverly singing it, with just a piano and choir is simply amazing.

Covers are mostly dire, becasue they are being covered because the original was great in the first place, 90% of the time:

Jeff Buckley - Hallelujah
Sonic Youth - Superstar
and at a stretch, The White Stripes - I Just Don't Know What To Do With Myself

Apart from that, I don't see much that improves on the original, and even these are debatable.
