For me, Bruce Springsteen. He is well into his 50s and is still producing great music and touring regularly doing 3 hour shows solo or with the E Street Band.

Other great musicians and singers that I love who are still actively recording are Mark Knopfler, Janis Ian, Joni Mitchell, Tracy Chapman, Al Stewart and Bob Dylan.

Perhaps only Springsteen, Mitchell and Dylan would be considered legends, though the others have also made great music over many decades.

Joni Mitchell
Bob Dylan

I would like ot add:-

Neil Young - an ongoing and important artist influencing a range of gernes
Peter Green - true genius
John Mayall - Peter Green and Clapton's old boss - still going
Leonard Cohen - poet, genius, visionary
Jimmy Page - again worked in one of Clapton's old band (Yardbirds) then Led Zeppelin
Robert Plant - Led Zeppelin vocalist & much respected recording artist in his own right

Stevie Wonder by a country mile. No one comes close in terms of sheer musical brilliance.

Debbie Harry tbh. In a band that was far in advance of 95% of anything out there, and didn't have to produce the vast quatities to hit gold that so many 'legends' did.

I dunno, Young, Dylan, Wonder, Jagger....there are quite a few around.

I don't understand why so many people say, 'no-one comes close' to Paul McCartney. I'm not gonna rant about him, because he's obviously talented, but the idea that he is more so than Dylan or Clapton makes me .

can't believe people would say Gilmour then forget about Syd Barrett, without him and bands like him we would still be listening to the string quartet

also isn't Chuck Berry still alive ?

Well, Paul isnt as good as when he was in the Beatles, but he is still alive, and the Beatles were probabaly one of the most iconic act's of the 20th century. Paul when in the Beatles, wrote some amazing stuff imo, and his chord structures and bass playing were brilliant and very original and influencial at the time. eg Noone would ever use an F major to D7 progression in the key of 'G' based on a major scale(not a blues scale) before him!.(All my loving). sheer genius imo.

Fair opinion. Still doesn't justify 'no-one comes close'.

I never said that myself though, Paul just edged it for me, but I suppose it depends on musical genres as well.
eg For metal I'd say Ossie and Black Sabbath.

Dylan was instumental(pardon the pun) in making 'pop' lyrics something more than just 'boy loves girl' type things and most certainly influenced the Beatles lyrics later on, especially Johns. I forgot to add him(Dylan) to my list though!.
