On the eve of Live8, just wanted to say a big up to Midge Ure ! It sickens me the lack of credit Midge gets for all his work with the Band Aid Trust over the last 20 years- if it wasn't for him, there would have been no "Do They Know It's Christmas". His recent OBE was long overdue. Geldof hogs the limelight, but this isn't a one-man show !

I agree with you.

He was also behind one of the great songs of the 80s in Vienna, sadly kept from the number one slot by Joe bloody Dolce and Shaddap your face.

Have you seen his lovely daughter Molly. She is the red haired singer and guitarist with the Faders.

About the only thing to appreciate about Midge Ure is he isn't a stereotypical Scottish g*bsh*te forever going on about how great he is - makes you wonder if he is actually a Scot at all.

Let's face it - Ultravox were cr*p - you never hear people admitting to liking them - it's one of the biggest 'dark secrets' of my generation.

But yes, his daughter is fit (from the one clip of the Faders I've seen).

So yes Midge - keep your mouth shut - we appreciate it!

Wow.. I didn't realise that was his daughter. She's pretty hot.

I bet having Midge Ure for a dad helps you get started in the industry though.

'Dancing With Tears In My Eyes' was one of my favourite songs of the 80s.

And Quartet remains a brilliant atmospheric album I might add.

This has nothing to do with my being a Scot but I think he doesnae got the recognition he deserves as a musician ,never Mind his work for Band Aid.

Don't forget his previous work in Slik and the Rich Kids - this guy has a past!

Plus Visage, and a tour with Thin Lizzy !

He also had a massive hit in Europe a few years ago with "Breathe", which was used in a successful Swatch advertising campaign.

I'll admit to liking them, even in the pre-Midge era when John Foxx was lead singer.

And they weren't crap (but that's subjective, I suppose)

"Rage in Eden" was an incredibly intense album, closer to the spirit of Joy Division in parts rather than the synth-pop of the likes of, say, Depeche Mode.

That song has a fabulous tune. I'm surprised I hardly hear it on the radio, or see it on TV.

Yeah, the guy is massively undercredited for what he does and isn't like Bob "look at me, I was in a s**t band, and had 1 average song yet can still play at huge events" Geldof KBE.

I find Bob hard to like. But, unless you are really terminally cynical there is no denying that his heart is in the right place.

Without Bob’s single-minded and bloody-minded approach, Live Aid would never have been as high profile as it has been. Midge did great work behind the scenes, but it was Bob’s charisma and personality, obnoxious though many think that is, that was the driving force.

The question I ask is “Has it ever made any real difference?” It was great to see the girl on stage yesterday who was an almost dead child 20 years ago, and there is no doubt that Live Aid saved lives.

But did it save lives at the expense of others? Did it raise money that would otherwise have gone to more established and more experienced charities such as Oxfam? Did Live Aid finance gold taps and Mercedes cars for the despots of Africa and equip their armies with new weapons or did it get through to the starving people? I don’t know the answers but I do know that people are still living in abject poverty and a child still dies every three seconds. There are however fewer wars, although the situation in Darfur and other places is still horrific.

I went to school with Bob Geldof though I don’t remember him. He was in my brother’s year and he says he was an obnoxious kid at school.

Midge has the honour of having sold more singles in the UK than anyone, through his various bands and solo work.

Did anyone else find it ridiculous when Bob Geldof received an award for his music at the Brits?

"Rat Trap" and "I Don't Like Mondays" both got to #1 in the UK, and with the Boomtown Rats, Sir Bob had several other overlooked hits with "Looking After No.1", "She's No Modern", "Like Clockwork", "Banana Republic", "Diamond Smilies", "Someone's Looking At You", etc...but I wonder why these never get played on radio or on music channels....Geldof's solo career turned into one big flop though.

Midge Ure on the hand, had 3 top 10 hits only with "Vienna", "All Stood Up" and the excellant "Dancing With Tears With In My Eyes" in Ultravox. and a superb sole #1 with "If I Was" and another solo top 10 with "No Regrets" plus another top 10 with Visage on the song "Fade To Grey"....
plus Band Aid 1/20 & Live Aid/8 with Sir Bob.

All in all yes I agree it's true that Ure don't get the recognition for which he deserves. He at least should have a KBE too.

Plus I prefer Midge's music over Sir Bob's anyway.

He was a decent singer/songwriter in the 80s, but don't forget songs like Vienna, Fade to grey etc were co-written, whereas Geldof wrote all his own songs for the Rats. Still, he was a talent, that's undeniable. He is very 80s though, and his time has come and gone. A bit like Bob's, but then again Geldof is a bit like herpes, it goes away for a while and then pops back up again, much to everyone's annoyance.
Anyone seen Midge's appearance on "Filthy Rich and Catflap"? Nice to see he doesn't take himself too seriously. Still, anyone who was willing to appear on Top of the pops in a vest with a leather chained Nazi cap was always gonna be game for a laugh

Didn't they sing "Shaddup You Face" to him?

This was written in the course text for a very perstigious school here in the US regarding Midges performance of "Vienna" at LiveAID. It read as follows.....

"This particular footage was used by The New York School of Music and Art as the gold standard to strive for by the students of voice. From his superb use of breath management and diaphragmatic breathing (notice how he raise's his arms to slightly lift his lungs from behind his rib cage in order to free more breath space; a action taken instinctively by some) to his microphone technique, this performance of "Vienna" by Midge Ure at LiveAid has the potential to teach the students more in 2 plus minutes than a months worth of traditional study ever could."

'Nuff said.
