I did!

Killed many birds with 1 stone - always wanted to go to womad, always wanted to go to eden project, wanted to go to live8, and mariza - see below....

It was awesome such a chilled atmosphere... the weather wasnt too fab til the sun burst through about 3pm.

Our campsite was a ten minute walk from the eden project and we wernt going to go til about 3-4ish but went for a greasy spoon breakfast and got there about 1:15.

I nearly DIED when I saw MARIZA - my mams favourite singer EVER as a last minute act billed at 1:40. She did a 40 minute set and was un fckin believable. You have to check this woman out she has the most amazing voice in the whole world.... made my day the rest of the acts were class too, but coz i saw Mariza, they could have been shte and i would not have cared.

Plus we had a beer tent at eden

Bad part of the day - i lost twenty quid, but hey, it was a free day and thoroughly enjoyed it

Sounds fantastic. Really pleased to see this thread Daisy, because I wish I could have been there too. If you want to tell us anything more about the acts then don't be shy.

Yeah for sure!

i dont know much about world music, but i wanted to go to this one more than the others just because there is more to music than the likes of U2 and Madonna! plus, the whole thing about live 8 is about africa so i nearly died when i got my text

There was this one guy, it was his 70th birthday (we all sang happy birthdat to him too!) call Thomas something who was an exiled zimbabwean who shouted out against mugabe.

There was a band of drummers (cant remember thier names) who were great, and a band from morocco dressed in white who were good too.

There was also this woman, she seemed important, but i missed who she was coz i went to the loo, but when i came back, it was deathly silence and she was making a moving speech. I felt a bit guilty walking back to my spot when all eyes were on her....

Angelina Jolie popped up to have a little say which made my boyfs day too

Then Youssou n'dour and Dido showed up and sang 7 seconds and she then sang Thank You. Im not a big fan of Dido, but we all joined in and sang all the words and it was fab

Then, we went round the humid biome at one point and missed a bit of the show. And i bought my africa calling t-shirt and lost my other twenty quid

Never mind. After that was some rubbish hip hop band, and we missed the finale coz we were wrecked... but we saw the fire works from half way up the edens path.

I am SOOOOO glad i was a part

But to reiterate in my OP, MARIZA was the highlight for me. I wish she had been on last as a climax to the whole thing, but she was enroute to new york via Poland and agreed last minute to do a top. She has the most amazing voice ever, ever, ever

Yeah there was this one point where thomas cant remember second name was about to come on and they said we were switching to hyde park, so everyone ran over from everywhere to the stage and cheered and belted as loud as possible - dead good atmosphere

LOL. Brilliant. I am SOOOOO glad you were a part of it too.

Thanks for the excellent gig report. And I've just remembered Mariza - she's the latest Portuguese 'Fadista' star! In fact I mentioned her in the female artists thread a while back. I've only heard clips, but she's on my list of artists to buy. Amazing voice. Really pleased to hear that she was at Live 8.

I'm currently watching EDEN on the BBC website.

Started with Tinariwen because I already know & like them.
Now listening to Mariza having read your posts Daisy - what a fantastic voice she has, I also think the musicians are excellent.

Probably listen to Geoffrey Oreyma next then Youssou n'dour then the other in no particular order.

What a shame more of this wasn't shown at the time.
I hope lots of people take the opportunity to check out this music while it's still available on-line.

Brilliant - I'm very envious. It was great to be able to watch the concert on the web but being there must have been much better. Hats off to everyone involved for putting together such a wonderful show but especially to Youssou N'Dour for his impassioned speech about the need for perceptions of Africa to change and how the continent will only survive if the developed nations engage in trade with Africa. His music was superb, too.

Yeah, she wasnt even billed - it was a last minute thing and i got there just in time! i think i would have cried if id missed her! I would not have known of Mariza had it not been for my mam catching her on tv, so i bought her albums for her for xmas, i think she has a new one out called Transparent.

I heard Madonna singing "Like a prayer" on the way home tonight. as much as i like madonna, she is not a patch on someone like Mariza, granted they are dirfferent styles of music, but in comparison, madonna cant sing!

Definatly do people! I am a bit annoyed now after checking out the papers and news reports... the only mentions there seems to be of eden project are that Angelina Jolie said a few sentences.....

Its annoying me because the artists that were on were just outstanding musicians, and they are the people who have the connection to the whole Africa thing! Not bloody coldplay and elton John. Just because Snoop dogg, will smith etc were the representation of black people, they are about as close to Africa as I am.

To hear Thomas Mapfumo as an exiled Zimbawean talking about his country struck home a lot harder than any speech Angelina Jolie could have made (bless her, thanks for coming AJ, but you know what i mean!). There should have been a broader mix across the globe like this.

Ah well, its been and gone, we got to see what the G8 pull out of thier pockets now....

Having watched Daara J online today I wonder what the Hyde Park audience would have made of them. OK, they aren't proper guns'n'ho's rappers so maybe don't have the sophisticated political analysis of Snoop but it sounded like they rocked the St Ozzle projects.

I didn't go but wish I had, but I watched the whole thing live on the TV (BBC1 digital/freeview via the text channel, 701), and loved every bit of it. Apart from the brilliant music I loved the feel of it.

Its sad that it wasn't well publicised that the Eden concert would all be shown as it happened on TV and I only came across it by chance.
