Keane don't seem to get the credit they deserve.

They were fantastic at live8, really got the crowd going.
I've been to loads of gigs in the last 20 years and I saw them in Leeds last year and they were one of the best bands I've ever seen.
The press though just don't seem to get them, maybe they're not cool enough. All the bands they are compared to get decent press (coldplay, travis etc) and NME especailly seem to hate them.
Maybe it's because they've sold a huge amount of albums in such a short space of time.
They get deemed as bland but I disagree, they show a lot of emotion in their music unlike some of their peers (Dido for instance).

Maybe one of them should marry a Hollywood actress or develop a crack addiction!!!!

Their music just doesn't set me on fire. I find their songs boring to be perfectly honest. Seriously, I wish them every success, but they just don't do it for me, sorry.

Well I love them. They deserve a lot more credit than they get. They are big in america and have the biggest selling british album of last year. They deserve respect.

I forgot to say that I liked their performance at Live 8 in other thread, but I agree with you. I didn't know they got bad press from the critics. Keane write great songs and their singer is very talented. I don't see them as musically bland at all. They do have an image problem though - Tom Chaplin is unsexy and always looks as though he's slept in his clothes for a week. The others just seem to hide behind their performances rather than project themselves. Very little stage presence all round. If they did something about that, they'd reap the benefits.

Their performance was superb and only beaten by U2. Shame they only did 2 songs as "On A Day Like Today" would have been great to see them play aswell...."BedShaped" was so subtle and fitted perfectly @ Live 8. Lets big it up for Keane who have now sold over 2 million copies of HOPES AND FEARS in the UK alone. Best band in Britain right now. I love Keane and I can't wait for their new album later this year.

They get way more credit than they deserve. The fact they aren't playing to student pubs full of pretentious idiots (and before you start, I am a university student) shows how overrated they are.

I find them very listenable, unlike most of the stuff in the charts at the moment, although not so far to the point where I'd buy their records.

"Somewhere only we know" just makes me want to chuck in my entire life and vanish into a field with someone I love and a bottle of wine. It's so simple but brilliant.

I'm lucky in that my parentage makes me officially classless but I do think Keane are written off because they're ordinary, middle-class boys from Sussex. So you can only be a decent musician if you grow up in a terrace house in Liverpool, or monied like Dido right?

I await new stuff from Keane

Erm, Keane get masses of sales, and are crap.

I think that's much more credit than they actually deserve tbh.

When you are outshone by Razorlight, then you have a problem.

Keane are fab! They're really lovely blokes and their music's brilliant. I'm really pleased for them and wish them all the success in the world. They were great at live 8!

Their class is irrelavent to me also. I never form an opinion of people according to these artificial criteria. It's solely on their artistic merits they should be judged. I personally don't rate them, but they seem to have a following on here, well good for them!

The NME is the best example.
They had records in the writers top 50 album and singles charts yet still never have a good word to say about them, in fact they are continually slagged off.
They appear to be judged on their lack of coolness (which in a funny way their lack of coolness is refreshing), they don't try to be anything they're not.
Pete Doherty seems to be on on the front cover every other week and I think that says it all really.
Judge them on their music, if you don't like that's then that's fair enough.

They've been introducing new ones to their live set recently, and they're currently writing and recording the new album, which should be out at the end of this year.

Well said - just because music journos don't care much for them at the moment or they aren't getting much airplay doesn't stop them being popular. Remember, it's a fine line between getting a fair share of the limelight and being hyped to death.

The new Coldplay album isn't bad, but it isn't anywhere near as good as we're all being led to believe either. Their BS engine has been so relentless at times that it starts to work in reverse - there's always a backlash.

Then you get utter utter cr*p like The Streets which sells on pure hype alone, very profitable for the record company but once the BS stops they disappear completely. Franz Ferdinand also inhabit this twilight zone.

At the other end of the scale there are bands like The Blue Nile or The Sundays, neither of which have ever enjoyed intense promotion and publicity, but both have a body of work that eclipses that of Keane, Coldplay and Travis put together IMHO. The Bluey's new album 'High' is gorgeous.

It is really down to new material - Keane will get more than their fair share of attention in the run up to the release of the first single off their new album, and then the album itself. Remember 'Everything Changes' and 'Hopes & Fears' were plugged to death, but that was a long time ago.

While Keane's stuff leaves me cold, I think they have enough about them to justify another couple of albums at least!

Keane are a bland group, but their live performances are so far from bland, it's unbelievable. I watched Live 8 on TV and they sounded good, but even TV doesn't do them justice. I also saw them last Wednesday at the Wireless Festival in Hyde Park, and they were amazing. I'm not big fans of the group (I bought the album, and it occasionally pops up on my iPod but nothing major), but when live, they're a bit special.

Never thought I liked Keane but after Saturday WOW. What a brilliant live band. The lead singers voice is so clear and I could make out every word he sang. The only 3 artists I didnt enjoy at Live8 were Pete Doherty and Elton John, Snoop Dog and Mariah Carey. ok thats 4. Mariah Carey was just goddamn so bad.

I expected a nervy and sloppy performance from Mariah Carey, but all in all I think she did better than I was expecting.

Keane are awful, their songs are some of the most dull around and 'Hopes and Fears' is utterly DIRE.

I agree about 'The Blue Nile', if anyone thinks Keane and Coldplay write good tunes, they should try 'Hats' or 'High', both classic albums.

I am looking forward to hearing Keane's new stuff though, we'll probably have to wait another 10 years for the next TBN album

(High- The Blue Nile's latest album came out 2004 btw)

So you have to like Keane to have good taste in music then?

*sigh*
