Dr Who / Big Finish Audio

have just got a first batch of Big Finish DW audio adventures, just wondered if anyone else had sampled any of these, and whether there are any that you would recommend? Am listening at the moment to Land of the Dead with the Peter Davidson and Sarah Sutton and think the idea that the old actors are still playing the role is fascinating! any thoughts from anyone else who has heard these?

I got the first couple of dozen of these, and then cancelled my subscription simply because I never got round to listening to them! A few years later, I still have a few of that batch I've never heard!

I recall Land of the Dead being a bit lame. It falls into some very lazy dialogue: "Look Doctor! There's a giant monster with two heads and green skin climbing down that ladder to your left!" kind of stuff.

The best ones are the Colin Baker ones. Bonnie Langford is a revelation as Mel, and the new character of Evelyn is worth a listen, too. She's a retired academic, and completely breaks the "Dr Who Girl" expectations. Maggie Stables gives a very good performance.

The stories with Ace tend to drag a bit, as Ace has now dated and got very old-hat. After all the books, there's very litle new that she can do.

Turlough has only appeared in one or two of the plays, I think, which usually leaves the fifth Doctor with Nyssa. A bit limiting. Peri's occasional appearances are nice to listen out for though.

My top tip: The Spectre of Lanyon Moor (sixth Doc, Brig, Evelyn). Great fun.

The ones I recommend from the earlier lot of Big Finish Releases are :

The Spectre of Lanyon Moor
THe Fires of Vulcan
The Genocide Machine
The Holy Terror

I only listened to a few of these because I found them boring. The Land Of The Dead is really lame.

Most Big Finish audios are good, but there are some that don't quite work. I'd reccomend

The Holy Terror - A very funny Sixth Doctor story which has a great atmosphere as well.

The Chimes Of Midnight - Is very haunting. However, the 8th Doctor audios are best listened to in order due to slight continuity.

Storm Warning - The first 8th Doctor audio, which really shows how good Paul McGann could have been as the Doctor.

The One Doctor: - As a Sixth Doctor & Mel story this is one of BigFinish's comedy highlights, and one of the most quotable adventures.

The Fearmonger - Probably the best 7th Doctor audio you'll come across, especially in the earlier audios.

Spare Parts - generally renouned for being the best 5th Doctor audio, and is basically a Cyberman version of 'Genesis Of The Daleks' only done much better.

The Wormery: - If you like bizzare things then you'll like this 6th Doctor and Iris Wilthyme( annoying time-lady) audio, but Paul Magrs' writing is an aquired taste.

Project;Twilight: - Still remains one of my firm favourite 6th Doctor & Evelyn audio and Nimrod is a memorable villan (If you do listen to and like this one, try the 7th Doctor audio Project;Lazarus as well).

I can reccomend more when I think of any. If you want to know what a particular audio is like, ask.

I'd also recommend 'Spare Parts' and 'The Chimes of Midnight' (very Sapphire and Steel like that one). I also liked 'Jubilee' very much, which some people say 'Dalek' is based on (it has the same writer).

I'm afraid quite a few of them are somewhat lame, but are still good for train journeys, long walks, etc.
