The sun expells gases and energy all the time, this is what gives us the northern lights, when these particles hit out magnetic shield, it also produces solar winds.
Sometimes though it expells alot more, in bursts, these can be quite damaging, even out of the world of sci fi, certain satellites power down after solar flares.

I think they were around in the 70's. They were basically flared trousers with solar panels which powered a portable record player. They were invented by the same person who invented moon boots.

Quite right - I still have a pair, though they now power an MP3 player - you have to move with the times!
Moon boots were, however, invented by Dr Keith Moon (which gives us a Dr WHO connection)

ROFL. But it's actually not as farfetched as you think! There's a lot of great clothing on Gizmag.

I love the fashion sunglasses with built-in BlueTooth and the Seven Mile Boots that log you into chat rooms.
