Just seen them playing in HMV in Birmingham

Good Music, shame the singer was moving like a tw*t

There are many comments to be made on how a **** moves but I wont bother

Hard to Beat is excellent, Tied up Too Tight is good, rest of the album is average IMHO.

Hard to Beat is the same as all the generic dance crap around at the moment (Shapeshifters, anyone?) but played on real instruments. Big deal.

The rest of the album has a few good moments, however.

I preferred Tied Up To Tight which should have got more airplay to the current single. I haven't got the album so I can't really comment too much.

That's in YOUR opinion surely. That would imply that you think that there are no good dance songs but some may not agree.

This one's got me genuinely puzzled. I fail to spot any similarity at all.

Only heard a few album tracks but I love both 'Tied Up Too Tight' and 'Middle Eastern Holiday', they're certainly one of the freshest bands to crop up for a while, and in a good year for music that's saying something.

This is an odd one. HMV have it as a £4.99, CD only release, but with no track listing despite its release only being 3 days away. This makes me suspect it's an import and probably a collection of B-sides/videos, and the price suggests an EP (6 tracks or so) rather than a single. Nothing on Hard-Fi's website either.

So all in all, a very puzzling day for me.

The 1st part confused me too but I didn't want to look stupid by questioning it

I have ordered Cash Machine from Amazon anyway. I did think it was released a bit too soon after hard to beat.

Don't be puzzled. Buy the album and relax

No, there are some good dance songs. I was just comparing Hard-Fi to the bad ones.

I'm quite liking the Hard-Fi album, to be honest.

Because Hard to Beat follows the standard radio-friendly dance single formula to the letter. The big names that spring to mind are Daft Punk and Shapeshifters, but I'm sure there are better examples I can't think of right now.

It uses virtually identical instrumentation, except that the instruments are mostly live and not sampled. The chords are the same, and certain sections of the guitar riffs are even repeated in exactly the same way as many dance songs have to because they use guitar samples not live guitars. Sections of samples often have to be looped in order to provide some sort of variation in a dance record, but Hard-Fi have chosen to emulate this with live instruments.

Hard to Beat also uses the standard phase and filter effects that have become mandatory on modern dance records. Put simply, it's a dance record played on real instruments. I find it perplexing that you haven't noticed this, since if you turn up the bass it's virtually indistinguishable.

I don't understand why that's a bad thing.

Maybe because it lacks originality?
