Why does Derek insist Science cant read or write?

When BB set the task for the 'brainiest HM' to come to the diary room, all the other HM's wanted Derek to go. Derek obviously didn't wish to do this because he thought his so called 'substantial' knowledge base would be seen for the shame that it is. He thought the questions would be of the 'general knowledge' kind (exactly the type he & Kemal set for the other HM's when they have their quiz nights). So it was clear to me that he was not going to put himself up for ridicule from any of the other lowly HM's, which is why Kemal ended up doing the task to win them their video messages.

Retarded because it involves two separate leaps of logic

1. that Makosi et al are the bourgeois - why? what is the comparison?

2. orangery - bourgeoisary - it's not exactly an obvious leap

also bourgeoisary sounds retarded

Hmm... power and control yep thats what Derek is about too probably, Science cannot be controlled or manipulated to Derek's dismay.

You know, I blow hot and codl with Derek, but I'm starting to wonder if indeed his attitude to science is purely driven by the game.

This is what I like about Science, he will not be swayed from being an individual. I would be happy if he won.

1. I made the assumption that Makosi et al were who he was referring to as the bourgeoisie in the house. It would be very like Derek to use such a phrase to describe them.

2. Sorry, evidently confused you there... I meant it was the same sort of word as Orangery (or servery), not that it was one.

I agree, also I think Derek knows Science is the one who can see straight through the fake persona he's constructed for himself to the real person - a working class black man JUST LIKE SCIENCE.

Derek is not 'upper class', absolutely nowhere near it. He hangs with the 'right' people, joins the clubs, wears the clothes and has adopted the accent, which I notice has been slipping quite a bit for the last 2 weeks - touches of Laaahhndan creeping back in - but Science knows him for what he really is. Science IS it.

twit Derek who calls Science a peasant.I hope Science

Yep, and they have that name for themselves, the 'boudoir G' or something like that, aka the bedroom gang.

I agree, although I would also add that Science is also concerned about others, so it is not always about himself. I found it sad that in the same time frame that Science, was sticking up for Makosi, she was telling Derek she hated Science.

1. I can't really see why Makosi et al are the bourgeois(ie) in that house though?

2. No, I got what you meant, I just don't think many people would pick up on it.

Although now we have the new option of the boudoir G, so perhaps we were both wrong.

Maybe he means he wishes he had stayed on at school - something almost unheard of in some run-down areas.

Oh you mean to A-levels rather than leaving at 16?

Yeah perhaps, you could well be right.

I always think of staying on to A-level as finishing school and leaving before that as leaving early.

Thats right. The school he attended may have had a 6th form, but if he was anything like me, he was running out as soon as he was able. (how I regretted it in later years!!)

I think what you have said is very interesting - you're partly suggesting first that Science is genuine and Derek is fake. Starting with their names - and what can be more central to your persona than what you are called - Derek goes by his given name, Science has decided he is to be called Science the Great!!! My point is that they are both constructed personas - you just happen to prefer one over the other. Lots of people from Science's background are completely integrated into middle England or whatever you want to call mainstream Britain.

You are also implying that 'working class' people cannot better themselves in some respects, calling it fake. There's nothing wrong with going to the 'right' places if you can get in, or wearing the 'right' clothes, just as there is nothing wrong in doing the supposedly 'wrong' things. It's just personal taste. Derek speaks with received pronunciation which is the traditional thing for educated people or those trying to educate themselves in Britain to do. I like it because it is effortless for me to listen to people who talk like that (I am Scots, living in London, took me ages to understand some Londoners and I know vice versa!). I can understand every word Derek and Makosi and Kemal say - they are all excellent speakers - Science not only shouts he garbles a lot of his words, so even if he is making a vaild point I find him the most difficult to pick up.

Yes I think we probably were both wrong Although as Derek considers himself upper class he might consider Mak et al as bourgeois in the derogatory use of the term - as middle class and philistine.

I think there could be some truth in that. Maybe Derek sees some of his past in Science and it worries him a bit. I also wonder if he thinks Science is an bright boy and it bothers him to see him waste his talents (as Derek would see it).

In the early days, some of the housemates christened the Loft 'the Boudoir G'. Some housemates, including Derek, mispronounce it (either consciously or unconsciously) 'the Bourgeosie'.

This is my take on the sharp change in Derek's attitude to Science since the beginning of last week:

Derek is a professional manipulator. We are now past the halfway mark and heading for home. I think Derek is planning ahead - asking himself who it would benefit him to be in there with in the final week. Derek wants to be 'the only black man in the village'. In the final week, you want to stand out, to be unique. If he was only one of two black men, it would compromise his USP. If Derek's plan had worked - if Science had gone out last week - I expect he would by now have turned to working on being 'the only gay in the village'.

Thats a very good theory. We are getting close to the finishing line now, and people are getting desperate.

You know chapeltown/Harehills isnt that run down now as much as some would like to believe. There is quite alot of projects regenerated services/activities in the area. E.g., the Northern Contempory Dance School, The Host (Media complex). This is where Science comes from and the high school he went to have a high proportion of pupils who stay on into 6th form.

In the video Graffiti (see this page), Science says that he got into trouble with the law and was serving a community service order.

Does anyone know what trouble he got into?
