I know what you mean, the place i come from is not particularly run down either, (apart from certain areas) however its considered 'uncool' to stay on at school, only the 'boffs' do that, everyone else just goes and signs on. Not many go to college, at least not straight away, they might a couple of years down the line when they have had enough of arsing about.

My point is that they are both constructed personas - you just happen to prefer one over the other. Lots of people from Science's background are completely integrated into middle England or whatever you want to call mainstream Britain.

You are also implying that 'working class' people cannot better themselves in some respects, calling it fake. There's nothing wrong with going to the 'right' places if you can get in, or wearing the 'right' clothes, just as there is nothing wrong in doing the supposedly 'wrong' things. It's just personal taste. Derek speaks with received pronunciation which is the traditional thing for educated people or those trying to educate themselves in Britain to do. I like it because it is effortless for me to listen to people who talk like that (I am Scots, living in London, took me ages to understand some Londoners and I know vice versa!). I can understand every word Derek and Makosi and Kemal say - they are all excellent speakers - Science not only shouts he garbles a lot of his words, so even if he is making a vaild point I find him the most difficult to pick up.”

I don't think you've got what other posters are trying to say at all.

No-one really cares what either of them are called. What IS being said is that Derek maybe sees something in Sciences character/ways that reminds him of place he'd rather forget. In trying to forget these things, he thinks it would be a good idea to try and turn Science in to a 'mini him', which of course, Science is having none of. Because of this Derek feels the need to treat Science badly - by name calling, whispering behind his back, accusing him of theft etc. This behaviour is disturbing coming from anyone at the best of times, but from someone who thinks they are such a role model for society, it is pretty disgusting.

I don't believe it has anything to do with the clothes Derek wears or the people he hangs with (although this probably helps Derek to keep his behaviour to a bear mininum if all around him act as he does). I also do not beleive that anyone on this forum has said that 'working class' people cannot 'better' themselves or are fake.

Yes, Science does have a problem with communication but that alone does does warrent any of the disturbing behaviour that is being 'dished' out by Derek - no matter what he's wearing or who is hanging out with.

Don't forget, Derek is an employer, he is rich, he has a butler and housekeeper. He is used to giving out orders and having them obeyed without question. The reason he doesn't like Science is because he won't dance to his tune and he can't handle it.

It's because Derek is a snob...

I thought when I saw the title of the thread that Derek had actually said this, only to click on the link and find he said no such thing.

I'm presuming that Science has contributed towards the shopping list before, and that Derek was basing his reasons on past shopping lists!

He might have added up things wrong (which they all do, how can you go £30 over!! ) but Derek says he hasnt even seen his writing, so how can he comment?

He has mentioned this previously also.

Fair comment, but then again what has adding up got to do with reading and writing?

I think Derek was right. Kemal started it off with his interpretation of 'Bourgeoisie' - he called it 'boudoir ghi' or something like that.. not that i'm defending Derek or anything. But if we're talking literacy... then he used the correct word.

Yep, seem to remember an early conversation between Science, Derek and Roberto where Science said that all the black kids except him in his class had left school for various reasons by the age of 15 - and there was nothing for him to stay for. Think he was trying to make the point that the school didn't provide role models for the black kids and that it was difficult to conform and study if you were in that group.

I'm sorry but I've no idea how you drew those conclusions from my post, but you have got me all wrong, wrong and wrong again!

I won't expound further at the moment as I'm just off to collect my son from school - sorry to post and run.
