Oh, please God, not. But here's the link:

I hated that thing. I wanted to take a tin opener to its prissy little hide.

I don't see the big deal about K-9 but maybe its beacasue I am a relativly new Whovite.

The only episode I have seen with him in it rightly enough is the Leisurehive, where he promptly short circuits at the very start.

Oh wait, He was in "The Five Doctors" too, but not a very big part.

Oh well, if he does come back it'll be a nice nod at the past if anything.

K-9 has good parts in "The Pirate Planet" and "Warrior's Gate".

I like the character. Just can't help thinking they put K-9 into the series after R2D2 and C3PO proved to be so popular in Star Wars. Wasn't it about that time when K-9 was introduced?

No, not K9, please no! If they must bring him back, let it be as a guest on the TeleTubbies or something. Not on Dr Who. We must give DT a decent chance, at least, of emulating the standard set by CE.

K-9 was introduced to Doctor Who during the Tom Baker serial 'The Invisible Enemy' (first aired in October 1977), which just so happens to be a few months after the release of Star Wars.
He was intended to be in the one serial, but due to the cost of making the prop, he became a new companion, only leaving in 1981.

From the way I read it, if it happens at all, it will most likely be a single story involving the doctor meeting up with Sarah Jane who happens to have a K9 of her own. I can't see K9 becoming a regular character.

That's my understanding as well. That would put paid to all the discussion of updating K-9 too, I would imagine, as they would have to stick with the version SJS already has.

I'm sure I read RTD in Dr Who Mag, sying he'd have liked to have had the Doctor open a cupboard on the Tardis, and K9 emerge from it. However, it just didn't happen in the end.

With rumours of Dame Sarah Jane Smith's return, they could always sneak K9 in with her.

But I'd much rather they didn't.

Perhaps they should just use a Sony robot dog as K9 and get Sony to sponsor the show

I'm inclined to agree but I hope it's true about SJS. It would be great if she walked into the TARDIS and said "You've been doing this place up a bit. I don't like it!"

Ohh 'K9 and Company II' K9 could be amusing, but mostly when the Doctor insulted him. I'll never forget when K9's trying to burn a lock using his crappy nose laser, in "The Androids of Tara", and the Doctor snipes: "A hamster with a blunt pen knife could do it quicker!"

Isn't there also an out-take of Baker saying something like "You're not much f*cking use for anything are you?" at K9?

I interviewed the chap who invented K9 about six or seven years ago (Bob Baker?) for a radio programme I was producing for the BBC. At the time, there was interest in bringing back K9 for his own adventure series.

I got the impression either the series was going to be animated, or K9 was going to be CGI - able to change shape and fly etc. It all sounded quite good fun but, obviously, never happened.

I guess they have to bring K9 back via Sarah Jane because (if the audio/radio Doctor Who stories are to considered part of the over-all continuity) Leela and K9 Mark I and Romana and K9 Mark II were all living on Gallifrey and so (presumably) are all now dead.

I think it will be a terrific episode. I am really looking forward to an old companion meeting the new Doctor and commenting on how different the TARDIS looks – perhaps even getting a few extra details from the Doctor about the time war etc. But I’m really pleased they decided the companion to bring back should be Sarah Jane. She’s my favourite.

I’m also looking forward to seeing how they update K9.
