I'm about to upgrade my mobile on Singlepoint/Vodafone. After a bit of persuasion I managed to get offers of

£29.99 for new Nokia 8310 (plus 300 extra free texts)
£59.99 for new Ericsson T68 (plus 300 extra free texts)

I'm on an off-peak deal, paying £13.99 a month, so these deals don't look too bad to me, but the question is- which one is better? Has anyone here got either phone, and if so what do you think of them?

I've got an Ericsson T20 at the moment, so I am an Ericsson-man, but I've heard bad things about the T68 - are these solved in the newer T68i? I'm not usually keen on Nokias, but the 8310 does look quite impressive!

Any ideas! Cheers!

The T68 is a mighty phone, and I'd be interested to hear what problems you've been hearing about it. However, IMO the T68i does manage to improve on it further, speed of menus, better looking etc.

I'm like you, never much been a fan of Nokias, don't like their menus (or rather, prefer the Ericsson navigation), and they've always had a tendancy to just die on me!! Either the screen will die, the earpiece will die or it'll experience battery/charger issues. The 8310 is basically the 8210 in a new updated case, and IMO the 8210 was always very much a 'budget' phone - one of the ones that get given free with 2 Walkers tokens!

Either way, the price you've got for the T68 is good - cheapest I can find it for is £80 at the moment, and even that is on a special offer!

The T68 is a very good phone, and even better is the fact that you can get a free software upgrade to get the T68i software.

I've had one for a couple of weeks, and I highly recommend it.

SIXTY-EIGHT, SIXTY-EIGHT, SIXTY-EIGHT

I love mine, the sotware can be updated to make it like a T68i, and all the accessories are dirt cheap too
I got the MP3 player for £30 the other day.
The nokia equivalent is about £150 at least.

I got my 68 for free on an easter offer
I love it to bits, and everyone is interested to see a phone with a colour screen. Impress your boy/girlfriend or pet by putting a picture of them on your phone in colour!

All,

I have had a T68 since last november and I am very pleased with it - no problems to report with it at all.

Where can you get a free software update??
In answer to a query I got a call from Carphone Warehouse who told me it would cost 30 quid.

I've broken the joystick on my T68 . I can still use the stump to navigate but I will get it repaired soon. How come the T68 was so cheap ? I paid £125 for it on a contract upgrade. Would have been £180 otherwise. Whichever phone you get, make sure you have an upgrade path. Mine is one upgrade a year and I would say, the way things are going, that is a minimum requirement.

The upgrade is certainly free, but you have to go to an authorised Sony-Ericsson service centre. I was lucky, because my local one is less than two miles away (coincidentally, it's a Carphone Warehouse).

There's a phone number to find your nearest service centre on the Sony Ericsson website.

T68 all the way. The best phone by far on the market. Funny that before it the best phone for features and price was by The Ericsson T39. No Nokias in sight.

Software upgrades are free through Sony Ericsson centres.

I've set up my T68 so it does voice dialing on the handsfree. So, I say 'dial', then it beeps, 'Emily', then it dials my friend. I don't need to touch the phone at all.

Because of the way the phonebook is set up, each person can have an entry for home, mobile, work, email, etc. So if I start with 'mobile', then 'Emily'. it will dial her mobile. If she only has a mobile in the phonebook, I can just say, 'dial', 'Emily', and it will know what to do. It's really cool and easy to use if I'm driving.

thanks for the advice - i bought my T68 in the end and got it delivered yesterday and I think I've made the right choice! The colour screen certainly gives it the wow-aspect, and the range of features is just amazing. Plus it maintains the great Ericsson menu system! In the end I got it for £30 as an upgrade It's amazing what being cocky can get you with phone companies!

I saw a man using a T68 in town last week. I chatted to him about it and he wanted to know where I got my background pic. So I said I'd Bluetooth it to him. So we set it up and he said, 'I see you're name is Leanne', (it came up on his screen), and then it transferred to pic to his phone in about 3 seconds. Cool.

Another cool thing, if someone texts a smiley to you, it comes up as a yellow face, like in this forum.

Does look a cool phone - except it's a Nokia and therfore has Nokia's nav system which I don't like, it's not even tri-band which is also fairly good for me (travel to the US every couple of months), plus it's gonna cost a shed load when it comes out, I'd expect in the region of £200 - £250 at least. Also it's not even released by Nokia until August/Sept according to The Link!

The SonyEricsson P800 should be nearly out by then, which IMO is nicer still!

I only buy Nokia, cause Ericsson look poo, and so does most of the other phones! I get Nokia because of the menu's, and the 7650 has a new Menu not like Nokia's normally do, its all colour icon based, so i may not like it. My mates have all had ericsson, sony, samsung, and what are they all back using? Nokia, because they all had things the did not like, Samsung & battery power is shit, i am not going to bable on, i am just waiting for my Nokia 7650 to come to my house!

I charge mine once a week. it goes 10 days if I don't use it much. I don't see anything wrong with the T68 menu system. It is joystick driven but you have the option of using conventional keys. Each option has a number next to it, so you can get to it by pressing the appropriate number on the keyboard.

Can you simply walk in to a Sony Ericcson dealer, hand over the T68 and they give it back updated to T68i software free of charge?

I much prefer the look and feel of the original T68 with its rubberised back and white backlit keys to the plasticky T68i.

I'm holding out for an iMode mobile with built in video camera for videophone functions until I upgrade...

...I'll have a long wait then.

Why would you want a videophone ? If you don't mind me asking.

Hi Leanne,

As your are always courteous, of course I don't mind you asking.

I suppose it would really make me feel that I was living in a post-modern futuristic society. Why? I don't know really... At least I could send my mum a live video message on her birthday(if she also had a compatible phone). Ah...

The iMode mobiles uses are yet to be fully realised and utilized and will eventually have an impact in the same way that the text message proliferated. But this time with full graphics. It will create a whole breed of millionaires.

Our vision is our future - yet to be explored...

...plus I'm interested in video directing...

The idea of sending video messages as the equivalent of text messages sounds very much like MMS (Multimedia Messaging Service), which is available now on the T68i (when the networks start supporting it), and the new Nokia 7-something.

I agree with you, GPRS/iMode/UMTS mobiles have enormous potential... who knows, maybe Vodaphone won't regret the 3G license spending in the end.

Yeah, they seem cool. The reason I was asking you about it is that I wondered how you would actually use the phone if you were an early-adopter. I thought maybe you would need to have another user with a similar phone in order to make use of it. I suppose you could make a call to a PC.

You are right. T68s are cool but it isn't totally seamless. I think 3G will help achieve a more always-on feel, which GPRS deosn't quite achieve.
