Yeah, they seem cool. The reason I was asking you about it is that I wondered how you would actually use the phone if you were an early-adopter. I thought maybe you would need to have another user with a similar phone in order to make use of it. I suppose you could make a call to a PC. ”

I would most definitely wait until they flooded the common market to make sure I had a cost-effective approach. That way a vast majority would have them. What's more all services would be tried and tested.

It would be extra cool to think that they would be able to connect to PCs and with the way technologies integrate these days they probably will...

Leanne - have you had your T68 software upgraded to the T68i yet? It not (and as long as you don't play Tetris a lot) then I would highly recommend it.

I like the game where you have to make boxes. Yeah, I might upgrade when I get my joystick repaired.

Thanks.

Hm. Anyone know of any service centres near Poole that'll do it?

I wanna get my T68 done.

I know it has multi media messaging and maybe a chat function but what else does it have on the upgrade ?

My Mum has a T29 and it has chat. It scrolls up as she chats but each line is a new call So with GPRS, why didn't they put the chat function in that ? Oh, I know why, it would make texting cheaper and so they would lose money.

Hmmmppphhh !!!

Arent text messages sent over standard GSM and not GPRS? If so as Chat is just text messaging surely it can only be sent over GSM with multiple charges as opposed to the always on approach. If you can set Text messages to be sent over GPRS then surely this setting would also apply to your Chat settings.

And yes, I am stalking you.

You posted on the tsixtyeight.com forum that you worked at Wessex Gate, plus you're obviously quite at home technologically so I assume it's either Currys or PCWorld there. I live in Broadstone, so I'm only a mile down the road! Scared yet?

They took mine in overnight, because I went there at 5pm.

If you take it in during the day, it takes 1-2 hours to do.

heh. we should party I'm in Canford Heath
You were right - it's currys *grumble*
Stalking between forums - golly

Did they charge you for it? Cos I got my phone from The Link (company perks ) and I dunno if they'll do it for me.

I guess that means they do it there and then, eh?

Nope - I got mine from Phones4U, and had it for two days before they did they upgrade, all scott free.

Ooh excellent. I'll take it in before work on saturday then

btw I just went back to the tsixtyeight forums and noticed this:

“I have just booked in my (two day old!) T68 for the upgrade (at Carphone Warehouse, Wessex Gate, Poole - for Daz...)”

I guess I should be more observant

I can't see why chat can't be done over GPRS, so it would work like ICQ.

The guy who started this thread has his phone now, but i just wanted to stick up for other makes ...

I've had an 8210, and they are very decent phones... i wouldn't call them cheap(?), and are certainly nice and small. In my expericene, nokia have been very reliable, and their menu system is well thought out. I remember my first nokia (1997) was so big it didnt really fit in my pocket 4 nokias later and it still works tho.

I've had a samsung a300 for 6 months now, and it really made me miss nokia menus. Still, its a good reliable phone, and its instilled faith in me for another samsung. There are 2 batteries, one super slim one, which wont last longer than a day, which is probably why people think samsung battery life is pants. The 'normal' one will last 4-5 days, which is decent for its size.
Can't wait to get the new colour samsung, that and the dual screen look awesome

They make much of the dual screen but the use of dual screen on a phone, when size is important, is a waste. It's bad design to design a phone that needs two screens. If the designed it properly then one screen would do the job perfectly well. I'd say it's a gimmick.
Craig_E
06-06-2002
Have you seen what i mean by dual screen? The A300 has it, and i am sure i have seen it on other new models/makes.

You cant see both screens at once. Its for flip phones, so you can look at certain things on the phone without unflipping it. It is actually very useful, and doesnt make the phone any bigger. In fact, with the chrome aerial addon, i am sure the dual screen a300 is the smallest phone in length.
LC

I know, and I'm making the point that having two screens is, in fact, a bad design. Although. I'm sure it is sold as a positive attribute. I can see my screen all the time and it's the only one I need. My phone is slim and very small.

Edit: I know one screen is on the outside and the other can only be seen when you open the flip. I saw the phone when I got mine and I couldn't see the point.

flip phones flip out to be longer when unflipped. I like this, cos i feel a bit silly holding a tiny phone to my ear, and its a mile away from my mouth. Its a personal opinion, but i am glad flip phones exist.

a flip phone needs atleast one screen, but if that screen is hidden, why not have another smaller screen giving you the basic info, such as time, signal, whos calling etc.

Without it, a flip phone would be a pain, having to open the phone just to see time, battery power etc. also, when i flip my phone open, i already know who is calling, so a flip can be 'connect' call, rather than flip->see who is calling -> answer.

plus, the 2nd screen glows a sexy neon blue, which i like (no real use, but cosmetics are important too )

of course 2 screens would be pointless on a non-flip phone, but as long as flip phones exist, dual screens are useful, practical and not bad design.

and before you say it, yes there are good reasons for flip phones to exist as well as non-flip ones
LC
06-06-2002
Well, my other phone is a T28 World and my Mum's phone is a T29. Both are flip phones and both have only one screen, which you can see when the flip is closed.
Craig_E
06-06-2002
um, ok ok, there are 2 kinds of flip phones...

Ah thats it! they flip from the bottom don't they! You couldnt have a top flip phone and have the screen visibile.

I guess they're not essential then , but i like mine.
LC
06-06-2002
Yeah, I like yours too. Trouble is, too many phones are sold with gimmicks to look good. Like fashion items. Well, hark at me with my colour phone. But, I wouldn't have a colour phone if it was bigger or heavier than a normal phone.

Because the chat function on mobile is SMS. It is just displayed differently on your phone. As SMS cant, or at least cant be done profitably by Mobile phone companies, be sent over GPRS Chat sessions arent held over GPRS. If ya want a chat room over wap then this can easily eb achieved over GPRS, (I think theyre may even be one at WAP.SONYERICSSON.COM) However as long as SMS messages arent sent over GPRS, the Chat function built into phones cannot be held over GPRS.

Isn't that just because the networks are making a killing on text and so won't introduce live chat on GPRS/G3 ? That's all I'm really trying to say. I don't see there can be a technical reason.

Very true! I suppose hundreds of text messages only amounts to a couple of bytes. SMS over GPRS might just kill some of the phone companies that are in dept at the mo.
