Weird.
I was wondering if anyone had posted about James Blunt - no - refreshed the page - yes! Love "Beautiful" (although when I heard the chorus for the first time I thought it was a girl). Especially pleased that in this time of "Buy the new single - out Monday!", he's steadily climbed the chart to get to No 1. |

I dont think much of him. He reminds me a lot of Ryan Adams in the style of his songs, espesially Beautiful.

There seems to be a whole range of dull bloke songwriters at the moment led by Damein Rice. I've heard countless others advertised on TV and radio recently and to be honest they all sound like clones of each other.

I have only heard the single which doesn't impress me much. It is pleasant enough but it does not make me want to hear more.
I do have a very tenuous link with him. My nephew used to go out with Camilla, Blunt’s current girlfriend. Fame at last.

They've been doing it with girlies for years ofcourse - now every label has at least one 'soppy lad' to ensure good penetration into the 'male/folk/ballad/vulnerable/floppy haired' market segment, in the most part doing bad copies of songs from Astral Weeks. There is also a glut of hairy Irish violin-playing women at the moment, so at least they are being put to good use. Last edited by tonbangeratty : 18-07-2005 at 14:53. |

He doesn't do it for me. Too similar to what else is out there. (And at least Ryan Adams can break out a bit of rock now and then)

Does anyone remember him being promoted about 18 months ago? He was marketed with the same dull song and image but sadly he has returned. If you want to hear a truly talented singer songwriter check out Elliott Smith.

Well with a Number 1 single and album and only just knocked off the top of the downloads chart, who can complain???
I like the single (You're Beautiful) as it has a special meaning to me. It could be my words to someone whom I will never see again. |

It's a, erm, beatiful song. Instantly took my attention, which is odd, because I don't usually like this sort of thing.
Much better than the seemingly endless manufactured shite that usually fills most of the chart. |

I like him, his songs were even more poignant when I found out they were written after his tour of duty in Kosovo, he was a Captain in the Army and used to keep his guitar strapped to his tank, interesting guy Imo.

I saw him at Wireless Festival a few weeks ago, and he was pretty decent, to be honest. I'll probably end up getting the album for my mother and putting it on MiPod.

Much better than the seemingly endless manufactured shite that usually fills most of the chart. They're actually worse than the Frog, (which never claimed to be anything other than recycled dross with a gimic), trying to peddle instantly forgettable pap as something worthy. Boo!

![]() Plus there's the argument that Blunt writes his songs (supposedly from the heart), whilst the likes of *insert name here* boyband of the month are written from the wallet (by someone else). Plus his song is catchy- I really don't like Damien Rice or any of those other similar artists because I don't like their songs. |

I like some of his album. It will be interesting to see if he can continue with his success or just vanish as David Grey seemed to do

I like the album, but I think the radio edit of You're Beautiful is so much better than the album. One F*** takes away the whole delicacy of it (the line "She can see from my face that I'm flying high" is actually "She can see from my face that I'm f***ing high"). An excellent talent IMO neverhtheless.

FRIENDLYGOAT Goddamnit, Tonbangeratty! Not everyone believes what you believe! TONBANGERATTY My beliefs do not require them to. I have quite a wide-ranging selection of music to draw on, but in the main I listen to; Pearl Jam Blue Nile ZZ Top Joan Armatrading 10000 Maniacs Radiohead David Gray (specifically tracks 2-11 on 'A New Day At Midnight', mostly when p*ss*d) Bjork Counting Crows Dave Matthews John Mayer U2 I think there's enough there to get you started along the road to developing a more discerning musical 'palate'. Invest in a decent stereo too - poor quality equipment only helps to mask how dire these so-called singer songwriters are. PM me for any details on what to go for.
