Ive been singing for a few years now and im 17, but suddenly today my voice is far superior to what its ever been. Ive been singing along to Mariah Careys 'We belong together' and im kind of picking up that sort of voice. Not 5 octaves though, about 3/3.5.
What im wondering can your voice take time to break, would that be a factor?

Yes.

Also, the more you sing the better you learn to control your voice.

Cool, i seem to sing all the time. And now i can hold notes and i always seem to be in tune. Its good when you actually realise you have a vocal range and your not just staying at the same level.
Ive even stated songwriting.

Likewise, there's nothing better than writing your own song, composing a melody, and finding that you've created your own personal song. I'm just trying to overcome my shyness to take it a step further. Good luck to you

That's right, you can voice your emotions by expressing yourself through a song. IMO the best time to write a song is when your are emotions are alive, be it really happy or really sad. Like i say to myself all the time, take a risk or you will never experience your potential, shame i can't take my own advice, i know my time will come though.

Good luck to you all, i woke up on New Years Day this deciding that i had to do something totally for me, me, me and decided what i would love to do is learn how to sing and i started having lessons in Jan and i love it. Ive not got a brilliant voice but i enjoy it so much. Would love to hear from others who are doing the same.

Pretty much since the day I was born I did nothing but sit in my room and play records all day, and I knew pretty soon that I had to go into the music industry.

I've never had any formal lessons but years and years of constant practicing have made me able to control my voice to a sufficient level to express myself. It's the best thing in the world for releasing built-up emotions.

I am at the stage where i fusing different genres of music such as:
uptempo r&b/hip hop and lush ballads,
old school r&b in the choruses of each song ,
uptempo dance music with soulful ballads,
r+b, soul, pop and rock,
crunk+b, crunk rock and soft rock ballads
and well crafted folk pop.

And im getting a demo rerady, put i don't know whats best to go for i.e dance pop/ fusion or a keane/dido esque sound as thats what sells and what i would buy.

Do i start as a serious musician first i.e soft rock ballads or should i be poppy first and then can move in that direction as mature as an artist. As a writer i can write both.

I used to want to be one of those pop stars come actresses, but then I figured I couldn't sing to save my life Funny enough I stuck to acting though.

Brooksider, good luck. Not being rude at all, thats not the person I am, but you'd really have to put your heart and head into breaking into the music biz. Theres alot of competition out there, and it's very hard work. If you know this is what you want, go for it girl. Just don't lose focus, and work hard.

I think Brooksider is a guy, judging by the sexuality thread in General discussion.

You need to train your voice for all ranges. Once you know your limit, keep to that format.

I think the easiest (and safest) way is to determine your natural range and then gently expand it over time.
