Though being desperate and at the same time totally unlovable could well produce that result, you shouldn't wish it on him.
He won't be mortified because his perception of reality is totally wacked and changes by the minute and he has no critical abilities or self-insight to spot how wrong he is on every single issue. He will just continue searching for someone to look after him and make him their centre of attention and they will all run away or he will betray them until he gives up one way or another.
