Derek: Admirable strategist or despicable snide?
Spiv
19-07-2005
Watching the highlights last night I couldn't help but notice how Derek spent a lot of time coaching Kamal about how to approach Oralith about her behaviour. Then once Kamal plucked up the courage to start on her Derek pops up with "how about a nice glass of champagne?" neatly coming across as the diplomatic peace-keeper who is above such arguments.

Is he simply playing a very clever game ensuring that the hm's wont nominate him or does he just get his kicks from setting up these situations?

I'd say it was definitely both!

Admirable strategist - it's a game show, they're not there to make friends! And he has to do something to entertain himself

I laughed when he suggested alcohol just when you could cut the tension with a knife!
How was he to know that it would lead to all-out warfare in the House??

For someone who is supposed to be well off, he's pulling out all the stops just to get his hands on that cash! I don't think that he's playing that good a game (playground stuff really). I just think that some of the housemates are thick enough to fall for it.

Ambergold - I don't think it's about the money for someone like Derek, I think he's fiercely competitive and just wants to win. What he does to achieve this doesn't matter as it's "all part of the game".

He's really upped the ante now and is being very devious. See how he really only does the major influencing of HM's on a one to one basis. And his timing is perfect as most of the HM's seem to be suffering from cabin-fever, paranoia, boredom or disillusionment over perceived popularities (or all of the above) that they are easily convinced by Derek.

I can't help feeling that when they all get out and look back at how much Derek has manipulated them they will be quite surprised.

Derek his a total game player and as such deserves his place in the final weeks, but doesn't deserve to win it. What sort of an example is that to set to young, impressionable viewers ?????

Well I'm still not sure that he is just playing a game and its just him putting on an act or whether he is naturally snidey..

It nearly had me rolling over the floor that comment, it was so blatant, but in a nauseating way funny to watch. I just wonder how many HM's have seen through him, but have as yet decided not to let on that they have.

I would argue with the word 'admirable'.

I thought Derek lanced the conversation at just the right time and in just the right way, realising that Kemal was going to stick to the script and it wasn't working, as Orlaith is more intelligent than thought and Makosi was there and interfering which would be bad for Kemal and for everyone else. He is Machiavellian but who isn't? I don't think Derek has set out to win, he must know his chances are close to zero. It's more he has set out to have HMs he likes around him in the house and have a house which is sane and orderly and interested in the same things as him. That's only natural. The person that spoils it all for all of them is 'Science the Great' who creates havoc and can't even eat with the others.

I agree that Derek could well end up in the final group - if for no other reason that he doesn't get nominated. I really can't see that he has enough of a following to win, more he will stay till near the end because people dislike others more than him.

As for the role model - I don't think BB is about finding a role model for youngsters and if it were I don't see any hm's that would fit that description!

I think Derek overall has added alot more "wise words" "maturity" and "balanced assesments" on a whole host of situations than many of the other hm's.

Like just now?
I would be happy to punch his face in now!
Craig starts, gets beat down, so kemal starts tugging his lead, tells Kemal to stop it, so the Dark Deciever starts screaming "Mummy. mummy mummy, I want attention"
Just cause that bunch of vile creatures say something doesn't mean it's true!

Oh I would so love Craig, Derek or Kemal up this week!

VILE!

Science has this won already, so if you don't like it. Paws Up!

Has he though? He looks like he is saying something clever, he sounds like he is saying something clever and you would think that he has it sussed. But then when you analyse what he has actually said you find that it doesn't always add up to much.

Derek is definitely despicable for many reasons. But really the longer he's there, the more obvious his character flaws become to everyone watching. He's just doing himself and his party more and more damage every day, so every cloud has a silver lining

Much as I dislike Derek, he's exactly the kind of person who makes BB interesting. He's two faced, ruthless, snide, captivated by his own wit and self importance, and yet the house wouldn't be anywhere near as interesting without him there. Just so long as he doesn't win I'll be happy.

Science more often than not hits the nail right on the head with a quick witted assessment of a situation. Derek will string together wordy sentences which actually don't say anything at all, and just underline how lacking he really is in raw intelligence. IMO Derek is a chancer and a fraud - exactly as you would expect from someone who has spent his whole professional life around Conservative politicians such as Jeffrey Archer (convicted criminal), Neil Hamilton (suspected criminal) and Margaret Thatcher (Satan's sister).

Live right now.... he's a big baby. "mummy mummy mummy" He needs a good slap. He's always on about being the most mature HM so why is he acting like a 12 yr old playground bully?

Why does he hate Science so much? I have a sneaky feeling he really fancies Science, but knows he has no chance.

Also, he's found a perfect hound in Craig to rip Science apart like a fox while he sits there smugly watching from the saddle. All that's missing is the red coat and black hat.

I really liked Derek at the start and found him really entertaining. I wonder if the girl who paid to have the 'Derek' banner flown over the house would still think he'd be the perfect leader for the Tories. Come to think of it, that would be quite appropriate.....hmmm

The man is meant to be in his 40's but at times he acts more childish than anyone else in there, IMO. Lol, remember the tantrum he had with Mary? I'm glad Science has sussed him out and I think most of the others have too.

Didn't he suggest champagne as a celebration as his little plan had just worked?.His foot soldier/cannon fodder Kemal had just confronted Orlaith..just as Derek had told him to and had even worded it just as Derek had told him to.
