Been said before I'm sure but Derek is patently self-loathing. By saying Science was the sort of person who made him hate black people what he's really trying to do is dissociate himself from black people- i.e. "i'm not one of them". No self knowledge at all - because he doesn't want self knowledge. he rather reminds me of that freakishly clever boy who was on Wogan years and years ago cos he was an antiques expert or something then had a sex change...

I agree, I don't think it's racism so much as class difference. What Derek'sproblem is, is that as a black man he doesn't like being considered in the same group as the commonly perceived black cliche. It's much like a gay man who's embarassed by the screaming queen stereotype. He feels that Science lets the ( i.e Dereks ) black image down perhaps.
Having said that, it's not impossible he just doesnt' like other black people, there's a strong dilslike of Africans by Jamaicans for example.

That is only true for some Jamaicans and some Africans, times are a changing so lets not generalise. It is partly a class thing of course, however it has to be noted in the circles he moves in his colour is probably made a big issue of.
If you are confident with who you are being near to someone like Science does not automatically mean that you should be thrown in a panic and fear you will be clumped together. Derek has also made sweeping statements about asylum seekers and just to point out his nickname is a derogatory dolls name.

I agree fervently that Derek obviously has some thinly veiled self-hatred issues regarding race and it certainly affirms his political affilations with the 'Monday Club'.

Thanks for that Let's hope that some people won't accuse you of "tampering with it" and that Derek never actually said such things and even if he did "they were meant in a joking way" as this is all we're hearing lately whenever we dare to point out the obvious...
