He works in a club in Leeds called Heaven & Hell, or so I've heard.

For goodness sake this has been asked so many times in the last few weeks. Don't you normally come on to this forum?

"Some people haven't got a job, they don't have enough money to live on so they receive benefit. Only a fan of Mein Kampf would be opposed to that."

What has this response got to do with the quite reasonable question that was originally asked? I hate scum like Luxemburg.

Some people have a job that they don't declare to the benefit people or the tax office, or their economic activity is illegal or they don't have enough money to live on because they can't be arsed to do anything except lie in bed, so they receive benefit, despite not being entitled to it.

I would happily put all such people in weighted sacks and drop them into the North Sea

And I thought the people in the BB were extreme. I think I've had enough of both.

Don't some of these responses just about sum it up, hurl as much abuse at Derek and other housemates as you want but question something about Science's background and you get abuse.

It is obvious that Science has worked at some point since he left school, so I don't like the insinuation that he can't be a***d to work, as it is a stereotype I find distasteful!

It is also obvious that Science has done alot of voluntary work for his community, and that is very commendable considering it isn't paid and he still only gets a meagre amount to live on a week.

There is also substantial reasons to believe that businesses that illegally don't declare some or alot of their earnings so it isn't taxed, costs the taxpayer more than people who are living on benefits do!

does it matter if he has a job or not?

Finally, Science does voluntary work. The government is using the voluntary sector to deliver services that are, in many cases, statutory. If the work that was carried out by the sector was costed and charged for, it would cost the taxpayer a fortune.”

Good points here. I would also add that if someone really doesn't want to work, I for one can't bring myself to begrudge them the measly forty quid a week they are getting. If you're happy to live below the poverty line so as not to have to slog your guts out in a call centre for five quid an hour, good luck to you. I've done enough horrific jobs to be able to fully understand why someone with no prospects beyond answering phones would decide not to bother, quite frankly.

TBH Jilly I find the insinuations about Science, work and benefits just as distasteful as some of the stuff I've happened to come across regarding Derek!

In what way ?
Do you mean does he pay Income Tax and NI contributions ?
Do you mean does he do voluntary work and help within his community ?
What consitutes 'paying your way in society' in your eyes ?

I think science worked in a bar in leeds city centre before he came into the show,i'm not sure if he was a barperson or it was something to do with his music,as for living on benefits you can only claim jobseekers allowance if your actively seeking work, they do carry out regular checks.
