Perceptions of Caribbean British men and Science

In relation to how people in the house and some critics of Science outside see him as "too much", "too loud", "aggressive", "too full on" and so on:

I'm interested in how much of this is to do with culture, class and race and the prejudices (or at least misunderstandings) that can throw up.

Who on here, who dislikes Science, is either British Caribbean themselves, or other non-white and lives in an urban mixed area?

And who isn't?

Or white in a mixed area with a racial/cultural mix amongst close friends or family? (And don't count just being nice to Winston in the corner shop!).

And who isn't?

Without making a massive argument about it, would people consider saying something on this?

I feel some people let a manner that may be unfamiliar to them cloud the issue of the merit of Science's overall character and morals...

Nothing, it's to do with him being a loudmouthed, aggressive thug. Many on this forum said the same about Maxwell, and I feel Science has been just as bad.

I wonder however if people are making excuses for him because they want to be seen as people who are accepting him and the differences his culture may have on his character.

I am Moroccan (white, but African) and I really like Science. I live in central London which is widely culturally diversitated and in my school about 50% of the students are black.

I don't hate Science, but I hope he goes tonight. I'm white. I've met lots of loud, full on people in my life. Most of them don't argue loudly and relentlessly with anybody who happens to be standing near them though.

I don't think it's fair to liken Science's argumentative, verbally aggressive nature with the behaviour of Carribbean men in general - it's unhelpful and could be construed by some as you know what.

Absolutely nothing to do with culture, class, race or prejudices. Science is not like any Caribbean man I know, who are all really laid back and very respectful of both men and women. These young men are also especially respectful to their mothers who tend to be big driving forces in their family unit.

You should perhaps ask Science fans how many of them dislike Derek as many of them do? - why would this be I wonder?.

I dont see colour/race/background matters one jot.

I am a Science fan and I dislike Derek because he is a nasty, spiteful, cruel, vindictive little man who is manipulating everyone in the house.

I'm Irish but lived for a year and a half in the carribean while growing up and have maintained a large circle of friends who are originally from the carribean and Africa.

I've met all kinds of guys BOTH white and black that are just like him and lots that are nothing like him.

Personally I can't stand him.

I'm white, married, female, mother, middle class, live in a village in the north. I like Science. I admire his honesty, humour and his kindness. Could do without the shouting but apart from that he's a good man.

And Big Brother is a game. They all have gameplans and some of them are not very nice but it doesn't mean they are like that in real life. "nasty, spiteful, cruel and vindictive" could be applied to many of the housemates, certainly Craig comes to mind immediately.

His honesty when he sat back and watched Derek plot against the others, until he incorrectly believed Derek was responsible for getting him up against Maxwell? Such selflessness

Science has not contaminated someones food which is something I find reprehensible.

I think that Science is great, and I hope he stays.
I am not prepared to divulge my family background but suffice to say I understand where the author of this thread is coming from.

Surely Derek is of Caribbean descent as well. The point I am making that it is wrong to generalise about a whole culture. Science has more in common with many young white, working class males than he does with older black men.

I am white and I am not overly fond of Science. I like Derek though and I can be amused by Makosi. Science was moderately amusing and I liked the way he knocked out Max but sadly now his ranting and repetative confrontations are making the house tedious to observe.

He didn't knock Max out. He was just the nobody that Max was up against that week.

I'm this one- I live in East London and my friends and family are mixed.
I don't like Science.
Do you mind if I ask you to answer your own question hatboy? That seems fair.

Fact he eliminated Max. I quite liked Max but the upset of Sciences survival was great TV. Max fans are as bad as Science ones for overhype and propaganda

I am a white, female, conservative OAP and I want Science to stay and be up against Laud Derek and beat him.

I am the opposite of Science in quite possibly every way possible, but see more hope in him as he matures than in any of the others, which is quite simply why I support him

I was speaking to a friend of mine who's origins is black Caribbean and who is working class and he doesn't particularly like Science. Not because he is loud but because he doesn't take into consideration anyone else's feelings and is extremely argumentative and uncompromising.

Darren form BB1 was of Caribbean origin and he was great. The problem with Science is Science and not his origins. I don't think it's fair to say if you don't live a mixed area or if you are not of Caribbean decent, you wouldn't understand Science. Manners are universal and he lacks them.

What a load of crapola: anyone can come on here and say stuff like that to make their point seem more valid.

Like, "i have a friend who, like Derek, resembles a black version of Hannibal Lector, and he hates Derek!...Therefore he is a bad man becuase one of his own dislikes him"

How utterly appauling to bring race into it. you are a complete rat.

To me, Science is just young - he's a fairly typical young kid that's crying out for attention all the time and thinks he's the centre of the universe.

That's probably why Derek's taken to be a father figure for him, because he sees him as just a boy.

Science has got alot of potential and I think deep down he has a good heart, he just needs to settle down a bit and find himself.
