Thanks, minibaridame. Yes, that's roughly what I thought, though I couldn't remember the details. "Working-class East End of Glasgow boy", indeed! Quite comfortably well-off Glasgow boy might be more like it.
He doesn't seem to be at all keen on Science, though, describing him as (among other things):

Still, I always thought Fed was a bit of a skinny task-bungling gobshite. Since that's the way he describes himself in the article, I guess it must be all right to say that.
