Time Delay on 'Live' feeds?
alexblue
03-06-2002
I just heard Alex say that it was 13:54 when the time was 14:17, there looks like there's a 20 min delay on the 'Live' feeds. That might be appropriate for a free service, but not one that charges a monthly fee that is the same as the TV Licence....please everyone remember to cancel your account before the 14 days are up.
Alex.

Thanks for the advice, but I won't be cancelling my account.

Nor me, I was fully aware of the delay beforehand.

I can't understand a 20 minute delay. A lot of people who are using the feeds, have not got access to Brit TV. I'm a Brit living in the States, and want to watch it live. The delay spoils things as the websites have details before you see it on the feed...

I have emailed C4 to complain about the delay, with us paying for the service advertised as live, it should be live or a couple of minute delay at the most.

The same delay is present on E4 and as such nobody sees it beforehand.

Actually to be factually correct, there's about a 30/40 second delay whilst the feeds are encoded and the like...but very little appears on websites in that time. I've not read anything on DS:BB before I've seen it on the web feed.

You guys must be smarter than I am. I don't mean that sarcastically - when I see something advertised as 'Live', it has a particular meaning, and 20 mins after the event isn't it.

It might not make much difference to some people, but I like to bet on big brother and I rely on up to date info...

I've no doubt that the reason they've put a delay in is so that they have 20 mins to decide whether or not to shaft people who've paid for the service by cutting off the cams when things get interesting. That's what happened with Nasty Nick, and it could happen again this year and you won't get a refund.

If channel 4 have the cheek to charge for this stuff, they should at least be providing what they charge for. I'm a huge big brother fan but I won't be paying for this. I just don't trust them.

I've never noticed anything appear on the websites before seeing in on the webcam.

Actually, thinking about it - that is a pretty inane comment. 99% of the time the only live coverage is on E4 or the webcam. The other 1% is during BB Live, which is only shown for a few hours a week I believe.

So how can anything appear on websites before the webcam, given that the people doing the websites are watching the webcam?

Besides - 20 minutes is a quick time, to collate the info, write the webpage, update the links and upload the lot.

I thought that they were not given the time when alex asked big brother, could it be that they have an approx time on the clock on the cooker?

Maybe you are right....I had thought they had a clock in the house....I guess the only way to accurately measure the time difference is to wait for it to appear on live TV (is that even really live though?) and count the difference between what Davina says and what goes on in the house on the webcams.

The delay seems to be 15-20 minutes.

But I get the feeling they do know the time, I've heard several of them ask the others the time.

i did that before and the cams were 16 minutes behind with the interactve being 15 mins behind i would have thought that the web feed would have been ahead of the interactive, i do prefer the web feed though as its very rarely censored

The extra minute is the encoding and transmission delay....

BB3 rocks on Pipex, doesn't it

Alex went to big brother on day 2 and asked for the time so the could set the clock on the cooker as far as i know this is the only clock in the house and as i said earlier im sure his request was refused

They set the clock because the water comes on at 9am every morning, so they know when 9am is and set the clock appropriately.

They were saying this morning that they also now know it's nine a.m. because the bedroom lighting is switched on by BB at that time.
