What do we know about HOMECHOICE?

It seems to be a superior version of Top-Up TV, that doesn't need a dish or cable because it uses your BT phone line. It isn't available in my area yet (neither is cable ) so does anyone out there subscribe? It appears to only use a small box of electronics that plugs into your TV. It does boast Sky Sports and PPV movies.

It's only available in parts of Central London.
It's likely to be rolled out nationwide... well, never.
If/When cable does come to your area, chances are it will have similar services (On Demand).

Home Choice is wonderful. Great service and great broadband connection.

Its changed the whole way I watch TV. I no longer rely on appointment to watch TV and can see my shows when I want.

Sky charges a fortune and what do you really get? Loads of crap channels which most people dont watch.

Im a big fan of Home Choice which is in its early stages

You don't pay for the crap channels - they're free.

Sky+ is good value in my opinion, and Sky don't recall 1,000s of boxes

Polly...
I'm after Sky Sports, Sky News and few kids channels, without all the dross. Does Homechoice have what I'm after? I'm not interested in the broadband for now.

I just think that Sky plus is going to be out of date in the not too distant future and any ability to enhance a sky box with VOD and new tech will indeed mean a recall of boxes or the need to buy new ones , as in the case of Sky Plus.

I have been with Homechoice since they started and although its not 100% perfect I have enjoyed the journey and the innovation.

For example I never watched shows on BBC4 and only a few on BBC3 but thanks to VOD I have become hooked on certin shows that I can watch. It enables me to try stuff out. With Sky Plus you have to actually decide before hand what you want to replay.

Services like Homechoice will be a core offering eventually and remove the appointment for watch TV we are used too.

But if you want Sky Sports then stick to your current Sky package.

I had home choice when it first lunched I even worked on their advertising campaign, it’s a fantastic service that has come a long way.

My reason for giving it up was you couldn’t record from the home choice set top box because it is encrypted.

Polly is right. VOD is the future. Sky are sure to attempt to provide it soon, probably along with its HDTV launch (there are rumours that the HD Sky box will have a broadband modem built in - perfect for TV via DSL).

However, as has been said above, people will have to upgrade to a HD package, or buy a new box from sky (possibly both) in order to benefit.

Sky will probably make all this stuff free or cheaper than the old tech (as they initially did with the Sky digital boxes) to attract people, but it will take time.

I'm happy with Homechoice. It's superb value and if you're desperate for Sky's premium sports and movie channels, you can get them as part of your package.

The broadband is excellent, and their replay service is fast becoming the core of my viewing!

Seriously, if you've got Sky and broadband already why not consider switching to homechoice for your broadband - you essentially get the on-demand TV for free, so you've got nothing to lose! Give it 6 months and you're likely to drop Sky as, to be honest, most of the extra channels they offer are pointless.
