Maybe it is an error that you marked "{sic} ".”

I completely agree that this paragraph is confusing. ... not helped by the strange inappropriate verb tense.[which was what I was marking ]
It would have been much better presented as a bulleted list.

Being generally used to the Pansonic 'style' that they normally adopt in the manuals, the way I interpret this 'paragraph' is a series of completely unrelated 'notes' which all apply as restrictions when Dubbing [ irrespective of speed ] ... and that these limitations apply specifically to these media [ -R +R -RW ] and do not apply to the others .. i.e. RAM and HDD.

In other words , the sentence about recoding from an external unit has no relation with any other sentence and only is being referred to in regard to bilingual selection.

There is no question it could be a lot clearer. Here we are studying it hard and still uncertain of our interpretation!

My growing impression though from all the evidence is that it never records in Widescreen on those mentioned media, no matter what recording techniques are used.

My EH60D Auto-updated the software overnight.

One definite observation so far of a difference:
Quite often the machine is defaulted onto BBC3 or BBC4 in the mornings , after recording something late on those channels. At this time of the day those channels are off the air of course, so I just get the red information screen...but these have always displayed in widescereen ...streched out with large bars top and bottom. [ I'm using a 4:3 set ]
Invoking any of the info screens such as EPG or navigation screens would switch the picture back to 4:3 [ as it should be for my TV]

Now BBC Three and Four are displaying as a properly proportioned 4:3 picture.

Another possible change : The EPG navigation subjectively seemed faster although this may be illusory. The machine had nothing to do at the time so there were no processing delays.
I daresay experience will show whether this is a real difference

I haven't noticed any difference with the one exception, that now when I turn on I get a banner telling me that there are new channels and did I wish a rescan, if I say yes then it scans and tells me that there are no new channels found. Can auto scan be turned off as this is a bl**dy menace.

I posted on another thread that Panasonic told me today that this was due to it picking up the updated software broadcast as it is repeated over a number of days. Not sure I believe them, but if it is true it should stop tomorrow.

If it doesn't stop, it's trivial to turn the message off. Look in the Setup menu

It can be found under the functions menu in: Others / Setup / Display / New Service Message.

If required, a manual check for new DVB service can be invoked at : Others / Setup / Tuning / Add new DVB Service.

Thanks for that. Panasonic have stated that the unit will continue to search for a short time after the update. Not sure whether they mean minutes after each transmission or days after the sequence...

I meant he'd be a brave man for "trying again", so saving us losing the EPG contents by doing unnecessary scans in response to phantom messages. Joking.

I am new to this forum and have recently purchased this excellent unit. I have a basic question I hope you are able to answer. The quality of the DVD is much better than my current el cheapo dvd surround sound system, so i was thinking of replacing it with a home theater system. Does the optical link on the Panasonic carry 5.1 surround sound data even though the unit does no have a 5.1 decoder?

Yup, that's the idea.

It'll carry 5.1 from commercial DVD's with dolby 5.1 or digital stereo from recordings you've made yourself

As you have solved the 5.1 sound problem posed by Xabulous then perhaps someone can solve mine? No matter what I do in the set up menu I cannot get Digital/5.1 surround sound from commercial DVD's or from programmes. My AV Amp which will show it is receiving a digital signal from my original DVD player, when re-connected, but not from the EH60D. I have change the set up in both the amp and the EH60D but to no avail! The recordings I have made, when played on the orig. DVD player, are digital stereo. Help for thicko's required please?

The update appears to have solved my widescreen problem.

I now find that I get widescreen saved to DVD-R regardless of settings of the "Rec for HS Dub". As you will have noted from previous posts I could find no way of retaining the widescreen on the -R disk, only on the HDD. Even a recording made a week ago using "Rec for HS Dub" ON has changed to w/s on the HDD.

The warning notice has not been removed but I can no longer see a need to change this flag. (I have no use for bilingual recordings so don't know if this reason still applies.)

That's good news Peter.

I am given to understand that, apart from a small issue of making future downloads faster, the sole purpose of this update was to address the way the machine handles some widescreen issues.

The one you report is an unexpected benefit.
