Does anyone know what the option RENEW means that comes up at the end of the programme options when you change a programme to occur everyday or MON-FRI etc? I can't seem to find any mention in the manual.

Hi Comic

I've not found anything yet either, but my guess would be that if the Renew is 'off' it would do a timer recording from Monday to Friday ONCE ... and if the Renew is ON, it will do timer recording every Mon - Fri ad infinitum.

On my DMR-E95H the renew function has the following effect. (From the manual)

Quote:
“ [HDD]
If you record a programme onto HDD repeatedly everyday or every
week using timer recording, the unit will record the new programme
over the old one.
This function can be used only when weekly recording or daily
recording is selected.”

In otherwords, if you have a daily timer but haven't had time to watch that program yet, you would want renew set to off otherwise the program would be recorded over.

I was thinking perhaps that was the idea but I couldn't seem to find a way of checking it by dummy programming. My reason for thinking this is that the default option is OFF and next weeks programmes in the guide are stiil marked. I'll just have to wait out a full week and see what happens.

Hi Guru's I have just bought one of these machines .. but nearly bought the latest Sony as they can use all media incl DVD+ ... but I like the Pan sytem of recording better... and thought how often wud I use DVD+ anyhow ??

Anyhow I digress .. Im having SKY+ installed next week..
any recommendation on how best to link loop the units... so i get the best picture and copying facility.

TV - ?? - ?? ... TV - DVD then Sky + or TV - Sky + then DVD.

I also have a Panasonic Super Video which i still wud like to use as a backup for copy my kids Vid's to DVD at some stage .. where best to fit this in the looping system.

I presume Scart for all is enough - no need for these speciality cables that everyones seems to be filling their shelves with??? - thks

I'll try and address your other issues later , but just to note that you CAN record DVD+R disks on this machine ... although not DVD+RW's ... THose CAN be played back however.

Oh for a standard world.

Thks Gavtech ... I saw this in the blurb about DVD+RW but must have missed the Ok to use DVD+ for recording. Nice bonus albeit small.

EH60D Scart 1 [ Top] to TV.

I don't know the sky box but assume it outputs RGB on scart ... so a scart lead from that to scart 2 [ bottom] of the EH60D

I presume you meant you had a Panasonic S-VHS VCR in which case connect this to AV4 on the back of the EH60 via an S Video lead and a phono Audio lead.

That should give you the best flexibility in recording facilities .

Theoretically you could daisy chain via scart: Sky+ to VCR Scart 2 . VCR scart 1 to EH60D Scart 2 , EH60 scart 1 to TV but it would be clumsier and less controllable.
Also I am not certain that ALL Pana S-VHS VCR's throughput RGB from Scart 1 to scart 2.

I draw your attention to page 35 of the manual for recording from other receivers and the options for using them to control recording on the EH60D

Note that Multi region Machines have the suffix MR...which is how you can tell whether it is or not.

Do you need a cinema surround system to listen in 5:1 or is this machine capable of this?

Thks Gavtech ... this is great .. so Ill need to get S video cable and a phono audio lead and ditch the scart lead Ive already purchased .. Ill exchange it for what you say... presume the gold 24caret are worth all the hype?

For what I know Brattbakkk - the system will output sound but will not control it - so you def will need a sound system .. either a home cinema kit or a half decent HiFi that has cinema surround sound.
I have an old but good enough Dolby surround HiFi and this is wired direct to the Panasonic WidescreenTV audio sockets..... I only use it for DVD films as its too powerful for normal tv and do u really need that for Eastenders and the like....

Thanks for that.......my ambition is to have the minimal amont of boxes under the TV along with the minimum wiring. Looks like my Freeview TV with the DMREH60 and a cinema surround system......now which one???

I doubt very much it is worth the hype... Nothing ever is... You will notice no diffference at all whether you use gold or not ....but where you might notice a difference is a few years down the line when conventional connectors start to become a little tarnished.... and you start getting partial dropout on some channels... I've had this sort of problem many times... Gold contacts certainly help keep this problem at bay.

Its up to you whether you wish to pay the premium... but do not expect performance improvements, other than the one I've mentioned.

By the way, I assumed that your Pana VCR HAS got an S-video and audio phono outputs??
Can you tell me the model number please?

Regards

Hmm interesting ... Thanks for passing this on ... Ill take it as a warning. I might have fallen foul of this.
Rather an important omission from the manual.

Hopefully someone will be able to confirm this behaviour in this machine , if I don't get there first.

Cheers

Hi Gavin

I checked the timer function on my dads 60D.

When a timer is set for the hard drive with renew off the DVD/HDD icon is a small stack of HD's.

With renew set to on the DVD/HDD icon becomes a loop icon.

It does the same on my DMR-E95 machine.

I suspect it's missing from the manual as weekly / daily timers are never mentioned. Look's like they forgot that section.

Hi Phil

I've just checked that out and indeed it does just as you say.
Acording to page 37 in the manual those symbols [ Stack of Cd's] means : The title is being recorded to the HDD. [ Obviously meant to imply the multiple platters in a HDD ]
..and the loop symbol means: The title is being refreshed automatically.

I have so far found no reference to 'Refreshing' anywhere else in the manual... Good job you told me. This is my first DVD recording unit so I have not encountered this facility before.

Cheers

Hi Derek (sldboxuk)

I have a NV-HS950 VCR wired up to my Panasonic DMR-E95H recorder.

The best method is to use S-Video and phono leads plugged into AV4 on the recorder. Should have been supplied with a S-Video lead with the recorder I know I got one with mine.

S-Video will offer the best quality.

You can get scart to S-Video and Composite (including audio) leads but using the S-Video and phono cables is alot neater.

The quality from S-VHS tapes to DVD is outstanding. VHS to DVD is very good. Having built in TBC (time base corrector) and 3D noise reduction helps, I think the 960 has these functions as well. Make sure they are on especially with VHS tapes.

Hope this helps.

Phil
