This might seem a silly question to some of you, but is it possible to connect a DVD Player to an old TV (about 8 years old) without a Scart Socket?

I have not used such a thing but this link gives a bit of info

http://www.beststuff.co.uk/slx_rf_modulator.htm

If you do a search on google for 'scart to rf' there a quite a few similar links to this

Thanks for that info. Could be cheaper to buy a new TV (Portable with Scart), as a SLxRF Modulater is £39.59 on that site, will do a google search in a moment.

Use any old cheap VCR as an UHF modulator (SCART in/RF out).

That often doesn't work, as the video 'scrambles' the signal due to Macrovision (same as the reason you can't record from DVD to VCR)

That said, I do that with my daughter's DVD as it is an old Samsung model which I have remote hacked to make multi region and switch off macrovision

Never had that problem. Its a zero-cost option to try if you happen to have an old VCR laying around.

It depends on how the video handles picture inputs. Some seem to have the autolevel record system switched in all the time and so are affected continuously when a Macrovision signal is passed through them, but others only switch in the autolevel record when in record mode.

Same here, although I have heard other unfortunate people have had the problem.
I've never come across it myself, and I've used three different DVD players with two different old VCRs over the last few years with my 19 year old telly. It's always been perfect.

My VCR is an Aiwa - fairly new model - and is affected by Macrovision.

An older Sharp one I used to have was unaffected, so I agree it depends on the age.
