I never got into Colin Baker as Doctor, mainly due to his daft costume. Maybe I missed out on some good stories?

I've seen a few of the older Doctor Whos, but I prefer the newer ones. My favourite episode was the Parting of the Ways.

in no particular order, and no preference to actors playing the doctor...

1) City of Death (could watch this over and over again, it's funny and light and a wonderful story)

2) The Daemons (just fantastic, actually quite chilling, i love the idea of the master as a local vicar)

3) Genesis of the Daleks (complete idiots guide to everything you wanted to know about the daleks but were too afraid to ask)


4) Survival (just because until this year i thought it was "the end" of the show on TV, and for the closing lines "There are worlds out there where the sky is burning. where the sea's asleep and the rivers dream, people made of smoke and cities made of song. somewhere there's danger, somewhere there's injustice, and somewhere else the tea's getting cold. Come on Ace, we've got work to do." just about summed up the show

5) The Deadly Assasin (just the doctor, no assistants, and the most grotesque master!)

6) The Empty Child (helped re-establish Dr Who as essential viewing, the new series had been good up until this episode, but this one is absolutely wonderful

7) The War Games (long and rambling, but neatly wrapping up the troughton era gave us our first glimpse of the time lords)

8) Warriors Gate (absolutely impossible to understand what is going on without watching it several times, shows the power that DW had, that they could broadcast this story, knowing that the fans would understand!)

9) Battlefield (tied up a lot of ananswered questions about the doctor, whilst throwing up new ones at the same time, more stories like this one in season 26 and we might not have had to wait so long for the next season!)

10) Rose (just because it gave me back my doctor...)

Out of the new series, many of the shows have been equally as excellent, although Bad Wolf/Parting of the Ways stands out for me.

I have only seen three episodes of the old series since the end of the new series, all of them from the Dalek Invasion of Earth. I am finding the story just as enjoyable as any of the new series, and it has loads of familiar London locations too! One of the scenes (about 17 minutes into Episode 3, The Day of Reckoning) was filmed very close to my friend's flat.
I am sure to love many of the episodes as I watch the original series over the coming months.

Saw it for the first time on video, after being lost for 20 odd years.

Still think this is one of the best dalek stories.

So many fantastic one liners. 'Your Butler, he's so violent!'

A great story set during the plague, and a wonderful twist at the end.

Another dark story, with some great one liners. For the record, I think Colin would of been a great Doctor, had he been allowed to stay in the part.

Great script, wonderful locations, and really scary monsters.

Hard to choose from one story! Again, if Paul had carried on...
OK, I'm not certain if the BIG FINISH audios count, but give "The Chimes of Midnight" a go. Now, if that had been a TV story...

"The Empty Child / The Doctor Dances"
Just this once, everybody lived. A great story, and the FX are second to none.

1) City of Death (Tom Baker)
By far and away the pinnacle of Doctor Who. Yet to be beaten and full of superb dialogue. Duggan was the best companion that never joined the Tardis crew.

2) The Mind Robber (Pat Troughton)
Totally bonkers but oddly watchable. Troughton, Jamie and Zoe remain my favourite Tardis Crew.

3) The Empty Child / Doctor Dances
The best and most satisfying conclusion ever seen on Doctor Who. "Just for once, everybody lives Rose, everybody lives" was CE at his best (and if they'd been more of those moments in the series then I'd have been happier)

4) The Five Doctors
Its great to see Pertwee and Troughton together and it's unintentionally hilarious to see how bad the Cybermen shoot. "What!! No not the mind probe" stands out as pure panto

5) Logopolis
The watcher was the Doctor all the time y'know.. Whoops should that have been a spoiler?

6) Survival
Under-rated (like much of McCoy's later episodes) and full of metaphor. It's surprisingly intelligent if you watch it carefully.

7) An Unearthly Child (just the first episode)
Start off as you mean to go on

8) The Masque of Mandragora
Much of Tom Bakers first few seasons are superb. This is one of the best.

I'll go for one from each doc:

WH: The Dalek's Master Plan. One of the few long stories (7+ episodes) that really worked well.

PT: The Web of Fear. As someone said above, this was a classic and an absolute crime to have been trashed, apart from episode 1.

JP: The Curse of Peladon.

TB: Logolopolis

PD: The Caves of Androzani.

CB: Revelation of the Daleks.

SM: The Greatest Show in the Galaxy

CE: The Empty Child/The Doctor Dances. Quite simply the best DW ever made.

How could I have missed off The Dalek Master Plan!

I toyed with the idea of adding The Greatest Show in the Galaxy. It had the seeds of a good idea but was a bit clumsy IMHO. If the story had been done in TB or JP's era with Jo Grant or SJS, I think it could have worked better.

Well the initial poster seems to have listed about a third of all the stories, so I'll keep mine much shorter!

My favourite changes quite often, but at present it's 'Inferno', which is made by the parallel world episodes, which were a forced add on. A true case of serendipity (if I may quote 'The Green Death')!

Others in my top 10 would probably include 'Caves of Androzani', 'Earthshock', 'Enlightenment', 'The Mind Robber', 'The Deadly Assassin', 'Talons of Weng Chiang', 'Pyramids of Mars', 'Revelation of the Daleks' and 'Tenth Planet' ( I can't stand any McCoy!).

That said, if you asked me tomorrow I'm sure some would change and, over time, I expect ;The Empty Child' to at least be in the top 20.

Sorry for that. It was just that as I reviewed my collection of videos, books, dvds etc when starting this thread, I was struck by just how many excellent stories there have been over the years. To narrow down my list...

The Empty Child/Doctor Dances are my favourite episodes from Doctor Who. They really were excellent.

Im currently watching the odd old episode right now, watched invasion of time today but it seemed to go on a bit long, I also must have missed the part where the doctor explained why he brought the enemy things to gallifrey in the first place.

It always amuses me when people pick a story with only one episode existing or one that's completely lost as one of their "best" stories. How can you judge?

Even if you saw the story on first transmission that's oer 30 years ago & people opinions change over time. Using telesnaps & audio soundtracks is not the same as viewing a story as it was originally transmitted therefore you're not judging all stories on the same criteria.

Exactly, which is why those 'all time best' polls are so flawed.

Yes, what really amused me is those Howe-Stammers- Walker handbooks where they ranked all the stories with marks out of 10. That's fine for the Pertwee stories onwards & for the complete Hartnell & Troughton stories but how can you possibly give marks to something like Marco Polo, The Savages or Power of The Daleks?

Then of course, you get people who freely admit that you've changed their opinions about certain stories but still seem intent on believing that you can rank an imcomplete or missing story in the same way as one that's complete.

Stories change over time. Some seem to age quite badly whereas others don't & you need to see them in full, as they were first transmitted, to make a rounded assessment of them.

I agree with Rita's Kabin: I can only comment on stories I have seen.

I'd love to be able to vote for Marco Polo, but have only got the Target book and a few photos to go by!

I don't feel able to pass any judgement on something like Web of Fear, as the remaining episode doesn't mean much as a standalone.
