Uk electronics, do they work in Australia??
I'm thinking of getting a portable DVD player for my Dad for his 60th birthday.I know when we've been to Spain I've used an adapter for the plug for any electrical equipment.
He's off to Australia in a few months and I wondered if he could recharge his player there using an adapter. I would be grateful for any help.

should work, don't think they use different voltages, like america eg with tv's etc, it should work

According to the above site Australia is 240v @ 50Hz. i.e. the same as the UK system of a few years ago. (We are now technically on 230V @ 50Hz - having been brought in line with the rest of the EU) Having said that , we actually get 250V in our house (The substation is near as dammit right behind the house) The range is officially 216-260V in the UK at the current time AFAIK, so there's plenty of room for tolerance. Your equipment will definately work, but you''ll need to change the plug, or use a travel adapter. |

Oz have a funny shaped adapter, like europe but with more diagonal pins.
This is where wal-warts come in handy, as they tend to handle irregular voltages for you (especially if they handle a full 110 - 250v range!) Does PAL matter on a portable player? I play region 1 discs on my Venturer, which surely are NTSC? |

As the signals will be going into the set seperatly as baseband signals, and not all packaged together in a single PAL channel. The difference in subcarrier frequencies would only apply to PAL signals as transmitted from a Tx site, or from a device with a PAL b/g modulator like a VCR. I still think it'll be OK. |

Voltage the same, different plugs (get an adapter they don't really sell the plugs there, more the whole cable moulded). PAL standards are different (so your PAL VCR won't get the Oz TV sound properly). Scart is unheard of (so new TV's Vids bought in Oz will only have RCA/S-Video sockets).
That's been my experience anyway. |
