I'm coming at this as a person who hasn't been a fan of Big Brother since the end of the first series, and have only seen about 5 minutes of this series.

What is it about this series that makes you want to spend hours watching it? Would you not rather be out doing other things?

Its fasicinating , its watching human nature in the raw , you want to see how others relate to each other, how they get wind up by others and watching them go slightly mad like Alex

Personally I'm sitting here thinking, thank God I'm not as thick as Jade, as weird as Alex, as annoying as Kate, or as large as Alison (note the diplomatic use of the word large, as I am not exactly mrs skinny, but can console myself in the fact that There's at least 2 of me in 1 Alison!)

Without getting too involved in the humanistic element as to why I watch BB I will say; I enjoy the unity of the interactivity of the show. I enjoy the logistical set up of the show and like to see the way the media representation exploits the housemate and the viewer. I enjoy reading intelligent issues raised by Forums such as these(we have no alterior motive than to speak truths on this site).

Being interested in Psychology gives me my biggest angle on the show. A 24 hour case study with infinite variables is what is a delight for my thought-processes. I am not a latent viewer of BB and the divergency upon which I can view an apparent convergent situation adds to my excitement.

Of course, despite infinite variables, I find that there are lots of common variables between all three BBs. This prerequisite allows you to be sure that there will be conflict, bouts of boredom, depersonalization, love attachments/detachments, back-biting...

It's all starting to sound rather macabre and I don't only wish for bad happenings but when you are deprived in a BB situation it is a psychic breakdown that is all too prevalent.

This is by no means an exhaustive account of what it means to me.

If the sun was shining, and if I had any friends left of my own, then I wouldn't have to pretend to be part of theirs!

But they are bored and it is getting a bit boring to watch.

Anyway, I've always liked 'Fly on the Wall' progs - ever since The Family back in the seventies!

Ooooh Ellison, you've made me feel a bit thick!

Hoping it'll get better!! But I'm watching it less & less this year. I only really like eviction night (& BBLB) as Davina gets the tempo up.

Well I watched the last couple of weeks of BB1 and the whole series of BB2, but BB3 is not what I was expecting, I think I would have more interest in watching paint dry, the whole BB3 experience has been abyssmal this year, I am not one to take pleasure in watching a group of people go totally insane due to boredom.

Unlike other years where the housemates were kept occupied with learning new tasks, where a goal existed and the group had perform together to succeed, this year the producers seem to be encouraging conflict between the housemates, for this reason I have stopped watching, I cannot support the actions of the producers in their misguided attempts for ratings.

Watching BB does not mean that you drop everything and devote your life exclusively to it! It's not like a choice between BB or something 'more meaningful'. It's just a tv prog but which in previous series has actually given us something viewable and debateable and had us interacting in some way with real ppl, not just some actors character in a soap or drama series. That's how i look at it, and why I looked forward to another series

What do you mean?
Of course you drop everything!

Actually I would have missed the England goal on the radio if I hadn't gone into another office to gossip about BB!

1) I love people.

2) I like to see how I react to them. I like to see how I feel about them, changing from one day to the next, depending on what they say or do, and how other people feel. My tolerance level gets tested.

3) It's unpredictable.

4) It combines many of my interests: people, internet, information, psychology, broadcasting, media, gossip and humour.

5) I like the intrigue and real drama. I like discussing it and guessing what will happen next.

This years BB has kicked off much sooner than the others. I'm glad this lot aren't as normal (Dean & Eliz) or as pretentious (Mel & Andy) as previous shows.

But to be totally honest, when each BB finishes, I find it so easy to forget them. Each year, I've found it very easy to accept new faces.

As for going out and doing things - I do. It's only on for one fifth of the year, and is packed with interest while it lasts. I like to make the best of things and live in the moment.

It's on, so I watch it. When it ends I forget about it for another ten months.

Most of the time I read what happens on the web, record the highlights show and watch between 11pm and 3am. I generally just use it as a time filler, and it has been pretty entertaining in places.. tomorrow night will either spark or deflate my interest, depending on how the split works out.

Because ..................

I don't have much of a real life of my own due to long term illness.

I'm fascinated/appalled by housemates behaviour.

I've been hooked in by the media hype.

I like to see how people react in a situation that I wouldn't touch with a bargepole even if the prize was £700,000 !!

I have an addictive personality and BB feeds that desire for something to fill up time.

I like to have something to discuss, argue, laugh etc about in forums like this.

Such a long quote, sorry. However Angela, I didn't wish to delete any of your quote because this is 100% of why I justify watching Big Brother to myself.

For two months of intensive viewing there is a lot to be gleaned.

In my experience it all adds to experience.

Why do I watch BB?

1. Something to do while waiting for the football to come on.
2. So I can manipulate the betting markets.

This is a fascinating thread, its the reason I joined this forum - I'm doing an MA paper on why people enjoy 'reality tv', its just that as a new member I can't post new threads, I've been hoping someone would post a thread like this.

Please keep this thread going, I want to know why you all enjoy watching BB.
Why watch 'reality' on tv when reality surrounds us everyday?
Why is this series different from the others (many people seem to think it's lost its spark?
Is it just voyeurism?
Is it trashy/quality entertainment?
What do you like/dislike about the HM's characters?
Do you discuss the happenings on BB with your friends/colleagues/family?

Keep the opinions coming, if you want to pm me thats fine - I just need your input.

Thank you

My real interest is the message boards and how people are reacting to the goings-on in the house.
I watch BB just so I know how to reply to certain flame posts !!

I just like a good gossip and discussion.

Living in an area which has a transient population and is Yuppie territory just lately, you don't get to know your neighbours, even though they are only a dividing wall away.
Everyone keeps to themselves and so you don't get fulfilled by over-the-back wall chit-chat
