Sky 42" Plasma Home Theatre System
Hi all,
Does anyone else have the Sky system and can anyone tell me if it is HD-ready? So far I have searched far and wide and not been able to find any answers? I looked on the Sky.com website which wasn't exactly helpful. I know it has a DVI input and I am pretty sure the resolution is capable of handling anything HD throws at it but I am not sure about HDCP?!?!? Any assistance would be gratefully accepted. Cheers Pieter.

From memory I thought it was a 480 line set, so not in any sense HD ready.
Edit: Wrong, it's 1024 x 1024. http://www.digitalhomemag.com/review...bsectionid=960 |

Haven't SKY pulled out of the direct selling venture?
A quick search indicates that at least one 42" offering was an ALIS (1024*1024) panel but no mention of the connections, safe to assume that it isn't HD Ready thanks to the age. |

1024x1024 resolution.
And it has a DVI input connection which Sky says is compatible with its STB assuming you get a conversion cable for this purpose. So as far as I can see it is HD ready but wanted to know if there is a website somewhere I can confirm this. As far as Sky Buy is concerned I think they have pulled out of the market. Their website is definitely not working at the moment. Cheers Pieter. |

DVI is useless unless it has HDCP and support 50hz input and I would want that in writing before spending any money.
Got a link for where SKY claim it is compatible wth the upcoming SKY+ HD or do you just mean that DVI(with HDCP) can be used with an HDMI output via a suitable conversion cable? The link given by sanderton indicates it is based on the 5000 model which isn't HD Ready. |

According to the Sky website it says the TV can be show HD if it has a DVI or HDMI connector (both must have HDCP ... how do I check this by the way?) and have an analogue component connection.
My TV has a DVI connection as well as the analogue component connection. Sky has said that the initial STB will support this analogue component connection but subsequent versions will not. This is to cater to people who have an earlier tv with these connections and not DVI or HDMI. I am getting more confused the more I search for answers. LMAO. |

If you mean the SKY HD website then yes you are right a DVI(with HDCP) can be used with the HDMI output from the SKY+ HD assuming it accepts 50hz input.
As for component SKY will only guarantee that their own channnels will output HD via component on the first gen box, nothing stopping the BBC, Discovery errrr EURO1080 etc etc from only supporting HDMI. So you could be left with only being able to watch some channels on the first gen box if you do not have a suitable connection. Basically you need two things to future proof yourself... A display with high enough resolution and a connection method which supports HD and content control. Take a trip to the AVforums plasma section, you may find some people who have the system or know for a fact which panel it is based on and it's connections. |
