Hey All,

Recently bought a Philips DVD player which supports DivX / Xvid playback - and it works fine except that motion is jerky throughout every clip, which can be distracting.

The clips all play smoothly on my PC - is there anything I can do about this on my DVD player or should I take it back? Do all DVD players with DivX / Xvid playback have this problem?

Nope - my Yamada plays them back lovely and smooth! Firstly, check the format of the files - are they compatible? Some DIVX/XVID players don't like certain aspect ratios, PAL/NTSC encodes and visual enhancements (GMC, and the like).

Try putting some other DivX files on and see if the problem persists, and messing with the setup settings on the player and your TV.

There are quite a few encoder options in both XVID and DIVX that can cause players to stutter and carry on. Since the files you have are already encoded, unless you re-code them, you don't have many options.

Have a bit of a fiddle with MPEG4modifier. You might be able to cure the problem with it. Take a read of http://forum.doom9.org/archive/index.php/t-72899.html for some ideas.

Thanks guys... since I only bought it a few days ago I think I might just take it back and order a different one online. Probably cheaper and better format support!

One thing I did wonder - the files are on a DVD+RW, I wonder if using a non-rewriteable disc would make a difference? Or a CD instead?

Also - some files, which say they've been encoded as MS MPEG-4 instead of XVid, play sound but no picture, do you think a different player would handle these files?

Also - any players that will avoid this packed bitstream problem so I don't have to fiddle around with the files?

Which model is it? My Philips DVP630/05 plays anything I put in it, with no trace of jerkiness or sound problems. I've tried a whole range of MPGs and AVIs of various types and I haven't found one it can't play yet. Yours may be faulty!

Have you tried updating the firmware?

No, I haven't, can't seem to find where it might be on the Phillips website!

Mine's the DVP5100.

Any ideas?!

This is the URL:
http://www.p4c.philips.com/cgi-bin/d...ct_selector.pl

However, the DVP5100 doesn't seem to have the firmware update option!

I really suggest you take it back where you got it, as DIVX should play fine.

Don't let them fob you off with any rubbish like 'Well you can't expect DIVX to be as smooth as DVD...' - mine is!

Well I'm in two minds - I was convinced it was the player, and then I was convinced it was due to this 'packed bitstream' thing...

What sort of files do you watch on it? I'm watching Xvid files of TV shows that I download from torrent sites.

That's exactly what I watch, both PAL and NTSC. The picture quality is not as good as DVD, but there's certainly no jerkiness or jumping!

And you don't have to do any modification to your files after you download them to make them smooth?

Sounds like I should definitely take mine back...

The files come straight off my PC onto a disc (usually DVD-RW) and into the player!

BTW the disc doesn't make any difference - I also sometimes use CD-R, CD-RW and DVD-R.

Get a slight jerky motion in panning scenes if your Xvid/DivX is encoded in NTSC and you're playing back on PAL. Guess some players will compensate for whether it's PAL or NTSC. If yours doesn't, then check if your player will allow you to switch from PAL output to NTSC output, and then try your disc (assuming your disc is NTSC encoded). This'll work 99% of the time and provide smoother playback. Course, if your player won't let you switch modes in its Menu, or your TV won't handle NTSC, then this may not work.

That also sounds plausible - it is mostly when panning that it looks so bad. I'll try that too (everything I've been trying to watch is NTSC so that could explain it!)

Thanks a lot!

Ah, no... it's not the NTSC thing. Still looks just as bad.

Hmmm! I sense a trip back to Argos coming on!

I was going to add, NTSC plays fine on mine and I've only got a cheapo Samsung TV! Sorry if I'm sounding smug, but I DO watch a lot of DivX stuff and it should play OK on your system...don't let Argos fob you off!

If the DVD Player allowed you to switch to NTSC (usually without a disc in the drive to do so), and you're still experiencing a slight jerky motion, more noticeable on panning scenes; and you're certain your NTSC encoded Xvid files have been authored as an NTSC disc and not PAL (easy mistake to make depending on what software you're using to author), then perhaps your player isn't handling the NTSC output correctly?

Okay, I finally got around to trying the "Unpack Bitstream" option and the files are now playing perfectly.

Mildly annoying to have to spend a few extra seconds running them through MPEG4Modifier, but worth it for the better results.

Thanks everyone for your help!

Yes, you need to download a programme called 'MPEG4Modifier' which is free, google it and you shall find.

Good luck!
