I know people only look back when they've nothing to look forward to but this should be good.

Plus, Jarvis has been off our screens for far too long!

He's a one off, always got time for Jarve the man (as Jimmy Saville recently called him). The trouble is he's too sussed and self aware, that's why he seems to have lapsed into semi-retirement. He knows there's a time to stop cavorting on a stage, at least in the manner he did, and that time has come! It's a shame but there you go. I have a mate who travels with The Orb as sound engineer and they played at some weird festival in Latvia (or was it St Petersberg?) and there was Jarvis and mate doing a daft DJ-ing act. Basically they invite the audience to bring their fave records along and then, whatever they are, they play them. My friend said he came up and said 'hello I'm Jarvis' and was really nice. "He didn't half play some shit though" he added..

Out of all the Britpop acts - Oasis, Blur, Elastica etc. Pulp were, if you'll excuse the pun, in a different class.

It probably helped that they'd been going since the early 1980's and had a wealth of experience of the music industry (if not fame).

The first Oasis and Blur gigs I went to were fun and exciting, but also somewhat shambolic - very typical of young groups getting started. Pulp, by contrast, were incredibly professional and confident. Jarvis knew exactly what it took to get an audience going, and would make little monologues between songs - you got the impression that the man was not just a singer, but a storyteller (which always came across in his wonderfully evocative lyrics).

He also knew when to call it a day after the death of the Britpop era, something which Blur and Oasis would do well to heed as their popularity begins to wane.

He was always very down to earth and in touch with his audience, something that Damon Albarn and the Gallaghers quickly lost as their popularity grew.

anyone else think that some of last nights programmes were absolute bollocks? or at least parts of them.

i only saw bits of a couple of the shows and some of it rang true just, as i always seen it, but some parts i just couldn't agree with at all.

Just a quick, related question, what band was Lauren Laverne in. I'm pretty sure it was a brit pop band but can't remember

Now that was a blast from the past.

I went through my record collection and found albums/singles from all the bands that featured on 'Britpop Now' apart from Powder.

Plus, they weren't at all rubbish. Not even a little bit.

Which helped.

Did anyone watch it all. I recorded most of it and wondered if it was any good. Looking forward to the Pulp bit best of all.

Interesting article on the BBC.

I've always thought Supergrass were the underdogs of Brit Pop. They didn't have to resort to pointless PR stunts or behaving like wanchors to achieve success. They simply produced (and continue to produce) great record after great record.

There was a bizarre sight at the Big Chill fest 2 weeks ago of a sizeable crowd of 'sensible' clubbers and downtempo fans going mental to 'Common People'. I don't think any other band featured in the BBC prog could have inspired this reaction.

There's a very good book by John Harris;

A great read, the bitchiness and drug abuse are about on the same mammoth level. Liam doesn't come out of it too well but thre's some hilarious Oasis stories within.

Liam doesn't too well out of very much at all.

He is a moronic idiot who has only achieved success on the back of his elder brothers musical talent.

I am not a fan of Oasis, but whenever I have heard them play without Liam, they have sounded much better.

What happened to them?

One minute they were a band and the next Lauren was appearing on Johnnie Vaughn's chat show.

In the light of the appearance of their two fans, I withdraw my "rubbish" comment.

They were a minority appeal band who did not appeal to me. They were probably preferable to many of the other execrable girl bands.

Fair enough?

He is hilarious, especially on the documentary 'Live Forever' when the softly spoken off screen film maker asks him about his 'androgynous' and he strings him along for ages "what do you mean?", "what you think I look like a lass?" etc, before letting him off the hook with "you mean I'm a pretty boy? well yeah, I've got good 'air and that, you have to when you're singer in a band..". You could tell the guy was sh***ing it though. Good story about him in that book. At the Brits when they won an award Liam stopped en route to the stage to stand and knock some fag ash into Mick Jaggers hair!
