Which Dr Who story is this from?

Anyone know which story this is from. I can't remember anthing about it apart from being captivated by the paradox ....

The master's tardis was "disguised" as a computer tape drive cabinet and it materialises inside the doctors tardis (or it may have been the other way about).

So the tape drive cabinet materialises in the interior of the doctors tardis. The doctor and companion manage to open it somehow and go inside. They are now inside the master's tardis (which has slightly different decor to the doctor's) and there stands the police box. They enter the police box and they are now inside the doctor's tardis again with the master's cabinet. They go inside the cabinet and so on ...... Effectively they are trapped.

I can't remember what had happended to the master or how they managed to escape.

Any ideas which story this was?

You're thinking of The Time Monster. There is a synopsis here:

http://www.outpostgallifrey.net/episode.php?id=3o

I think the ship inside a ship inside a ship etc. Is from Logopolis though. The Master disguises his TARDIS as a Police Box and materialises around a normal police box just before the Doctor does. Both the TARDISes form some kind of recursive thingy and the Doctor and Adric go through a few console rooms before they manage to get out.

'Time Monster' gets my vote for most boring Doctor Who story ever, and certainly from the Pertwee era. One to avoid!

Disagree.

I think this refers to Tom Bakers swansong Logopolis.

It was actually BOTH The Time Monster and Logopolis, although the seventies "computer" TARDIS was The Time Monster.

In the Time Monster, the Master forces his and the Doctor's TARDIS's (Tardae? ) into a Time Ram (effectively a crash), causing the effect mentioned. Jo and the Doctor go through several TARDIS console rooms as described.

However, in Logopolis, the Master (original thinker that he is) uses the same phenomenon, although this time his TARDIS is disguised as a Police Box as well, and Adric is the companion.

I don't think it's so bad - I'd rather sit through this than something like The Horns of Nimon.

Thanks for clarifying that everyone. I may have a look for the time monster on amazon - even though it sounds like it's not one of the better stories.

Incidentally (and perhaps I should be posting this as a new thread), I've just been listening to some of the Director's Commentry on the Paul McGann Doctor Who movie and it mentions that "during the filming Sylvester McCoy kept a video diary which I think he later released". Anyone know if it is available?

Yes, it's called Bidding Adieu and you're likely to find it on eBay if nowhere else.

It's available as part of 'The Master Box Set', together with Colony in Space, which was released on VHS in 2001.

The Time Monster? Yikes. What a thankless six episodes of dreary old tosh that is! At least Horns of Nimon has a few chuckles in it. The Tiem Monster is very long and evry worthy. Lots of standing around talking, and oem very very silly action sequences. Horns Of Nimon is daft through-and-through, and is full of nice big belly laughs. And Janet Ellis.

chuff.x.

Isn't that the one where they're on about a project called "Tom Tit" or something. I thought it was hilarious.

TOM-TIT was actually an acronym for Transmission Of Matter Through Interstitial Time.

That bit might seem amusing, but the rest of it was as boring as hell!

Depends on your definition of "boring". I'd rather sit through the whole of The Time Monster than five minutes of Big Brother.

True, but I was writing in the context of the best SF series of all time, whereas I can't tell you what I think about BB!

LOL! It's not the most gripping of stories but there are worse.

I can't abide "The Claws of Axos". In fact, it's so long since I watched it that I can't even remember what it was about (claws I suppose).

I don't need to! I'd much rather have two and a half hours of Doctor Who. There's more of interest happening in five minutes worth of that than in a whole day's worth of BB!

I agree. BB is purely mind-numbing and even 5 minutes is enough to out me to sleep.

You need to get your sense of humour sorted. The Time Monster is indeed one of the weakest Pertwees, but it has more plus points than The Horns Of Nimon - try Ingrid Pitt's cleavage for starters. Then there's the banter between her and Roger Delgado (the best Master of them all), Katy Manning in the most ridiculous costume and the cliched "wimmin's lib" stuff at the top. And the time ram between the two TARDISes is great fun. Of course it's really hammy in places - the Minotaur moment and the flying white "monster" - but that's part of its charm ...
