Oh dear. Not unexpected though.

Is it just me, or when characters annouce they are off, do you find you just want them to leave straight away?

I hate all this 'in 6 months' time stuff, as I feel I've got no point in investing in a character as they're not hanging around.

Plus, how many more 'explosive exits' can they do? It's going to be getting a bit silly by the end of the year at this rate.

I guess this means the end of Ruby too, unless they find some amazingly convenient way to keep her on.

This is a shame, I was beginning to like Johnny Allen. But it is no surprise as the writers are removing the gangster plots and storylines from the show.
Here's hoping Grant and Phil will have something to do with Johnny's departure

Maybe Billy Murray doesn't like playing Johnny now that he has left his "criminal" ways behind him. Lets face it Billy usually plays the bad guy so maybe it is difficult for him to be "normal"

Yes, and the writers find it difficult writing for non-bad Johnny too. He is pointless now. He just sits round the table barking at Ruby.

So all last New Year's signings will soon be gone? - Jake, Danny, Johnny, Tina and (I hope) Ruby.

Well I'm pleased. I never really liked him and I don't think JY or KH2 did neither. Lets hope Ruby also goes. Good to see an end to the gangster stuff.

EASTENDERS BILLY BOWS OUT
EastEnders villain to go with a bang as another star quits
By Nicola Methven, Tv Editor
EASTENDERS star Billy Murray is to quit as gangster Johnny Allen, it was revealed last night.

The actor, who made his name as Det Sgt Don Beech in The Bill, will bow out next spring after a year of terrorising the residents of Albert Square.

Announcing his departure, 64-year-old Murray said the decision to leave had been agreed with the show's executive producer Kate Harwood.

He explained: "I sat down recently with the boss and we decided it would be much better for Johnny to go out with a bang than to hang around the Square for years, ageing gracefully."

An EastEnders spokesman commented: "Billy has been a fantastic asset to the show and we wish him all the best for the future."

His exit comes amid a string of high-profile departures from the BBC1 soap.

Jessie Wallace, who plays Kat Moon, will leave in an explosive plot at Christmas alongside screen husband Alfie, played by Shane Richie. They will be followed shortly afterwards by a second Walford couple - Dennis and Sharon. Actors Letitia Dean and Nigel Harman will bow out in a big New Year storyline.

Allen's girlfriend Tina, played by Charlotte Avery, has already been axed and will appear in her final scenes in October.

The raft of farewells gives bosses the chance to build plots around the departing characters to boost viewing figures and, in the longer term, introduce new stars in a bid to overtake Coronation Street in the ratings battle.

Murray arrived in the Square as gangland boss Allen in January.

Viewers learned Allen had lost his wife Stephanie and daughter Scarlet in a fire, but he was soon joined by his other daughter, Ruby.

His first task was to take the Moon brothers, Jake and Danny, under his wing - and then he had to sort out the evil Andy Hunter.

Hated by viewers for blackmailing Kat into sleeping with him and wrecking her marriage, Hunter was pushed to his death from a bridge by Allen.

Johnny later took over the bar known as Angie's Den and renamed it Scarlet after his late daughter.

After Murray's departure, hard man antics in the Square will be left to the Mitchell brothers, who will return in the autumn.

Looks like he was axed. Kate is still cleaning up Kathleen Hutchison's mess by the sound of it.

I wonder if Grant and Phil will take over the club when Johnny leaves. I recall Grant was interested in taking over the club (called E20 at the time) just before he left in 1999.
Maybe Grant wants the club, hence why the Mitchell's clash with Johnny when they return.

Alfie, Tina and Johnny are characters I don't think that many viewers like anymore so it is acceptable.

Realistically what could Johnny have done in the long term? he was a pointless character and the exec has made the right choice.

I don't particularly care for Johnny but if he's leaving what will happen to Ruby i love her character it would be ashame to see her go as well .

This is getting ridiculous about half the cast is leaving but the end of this year and the beginning of next, EE are going to have to bring in more characters, fresh faces for people to get to know, it seems rather chaotic down at Elstree at the moment.

I never really took to him nor Tina, so this is good news.

Hopefully Ruby will stick around, perhaps move in with the Slaters or something.

I agree although Johnny's character did have a shelf life; he who lives by the sword etc. His past is sure to catch up with him. I haven't seen any mention of his 'leaving the show in an explosive storyline' as is usually the hackneyed line most two-bit hacks use, but I'm sure it will materialise!

Grant isn't returning full time anyway, nor is Frank and so it'll be interesting to see what fate befalls the show (and it's a show i still hold dear having been a regular viewer since 85) in the coming months with all the departures.

Will Pete Beale return from the grave in a dramatic Christmas Day storyline, having faked his death while waiting until the Chapmans were all safely off the scene?

It will be a shame to lose Ruby as she is such a good pairing with Stacey.

The departures from EE has created so many problems...

And your point being? Sharon and Kat will be the only ones missed. Chrissie had to go for the storyline and Sam was not that good in the first place.

Funnily enough there is a possible way the writers could bring back Pete Beale as we never actually saw him die.
