Doctor's Faithful K-9 Back

From today's Mirror.

DR Who's trusty dog K-9 is to return to his side when the next series of the hit sci-fi drama is screened in January. But the robotic hound will only appear in one episode. K-9 was a firm favourite with viewers in the 80s. It had no legs and moved around on wheels and had special antennae aerials instead of ears. This time around the dog will look slightly different because it has been redesigned for the new version of the show. An insider said: "Fans will still be able to recognise that they are looking at K-9 but he's been through some tough times since we last saw him with the Doctor."

Sounds like rather than updating him with CGi and new abilities, he's going to be all rusty/run down. Not surprising, really, since he's been stuck on Earth for 20 years where no-one has the technology to fix him when he breaks down.

I guess you will either be delighted or horrified that he's coming back. I think it's pretty cool, myself - I hope he's going to be in the same episode as Sarah Jane Smith.

The Official Website have now confirmed this and he will be appearing in Ep3 School Reunion with SJS!

NNNNNNNNNOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

That's the first time I have grumbled about any pre-televised news/rumours/gossip. It's that shocking a piece of news. I am sure he won't steal SJ's thunder, but it's still a jaw-dropper.

If K9 is just in that one episode with SJS it will be ok, I just hope he's not back for more.

You never know, if all goes well we could be treated to a new series of K9 and Company.

I almost managed to download this the other day - I would love to watch it again to see if it is as bad as I remember. The opening credits are so bad they are painful to watch.

Oh - I didn't think it was all that bad.

Definitely uphill from the opening titles.

Until the end credits that is.

He looks very much the worse for wear, poor sod.

They might at least have got the decade right. It was the 70s not the 80s.

Apologies to all John Leeson fans but K9 had the most irritation voice.

Call me cynical but I think bringing it back is just another merchandising opportunity.

Having said that, I suppose the return of SJS would necessitate a reappearance of the old electronic dawg.

I for one, am looking forward to seeing SJS and K9 back. It will be fun to see the modern take. K9 is not a figure of hate but a product of his time on the show.

Anyway this news is definately better than farting aliens.

They could have at least replaced his tail with a bent coathanger.

Several years in the 70s, a very short time, around a few months, in the 80s. 70s would have been more correct.

While I get comfy on the pedant's sofa I would also point out K9 and Co and The 5 Doctors. All I meant was that the article wasn't that innaccurate.

In terms of seeing the metal mutt back - I'm pleased. I think he has been much maligned and his only real failings were the technical problems with the prop - but if we didn't forgive that sort of thing would we have any affection for the original series at all?

Give him a chance - as has been mentioned by 68474343 (catchy name by the way), it beats farting aliens surely?

Fair enough. I just think that most of K9's time in the series was in the 70s. Let's not fall out over it shall we?

Wish I hadn't bothered now.

Maybe K9 will be out of the closet by now.

He'll have a big bulldog boyfriend called Butch, and rather than use his laser, he'll resort to withering put-downs.

Marvellous - swap the tartan collar for a black leather studded one.

I think as long as its limited to one episode there is nothing wrong with a little nostalgia... I didn't like K9 either but he is still part of Dr Who history and if handled will could add some good humour to the ep.

He was on GMTV today, not a very chaming dog.

Too right - it's absolutely a merchandising opportunity. After all - when did K9 ever add to the drama of a Dr Who episode? (OK, RTD - prove me wrong!)

But FAB that SJS is returning - best companion ever. Maybe RTD and co could be a bit more discriminating when they choose their next target from the "classic" series for revival ...?

Perhaps its appearance might not be so bad. It may just be a cameo, e.g. at the end of the episode back at Sarah Jane's house, with the Doctor giving the rusty old mutt a re-vamp before they leave.
