Neighbours.

EastEnders is an ill looking shadow of its former self and I feel the following could work at some point. Maybe one to try out during the summer months in 2006?

This might seem outrageous, but I think if Neighbours was pushed into a primetime slot on a trial basis, it would garner a significantly improved viewership and would be snapping at EE's coat tails before you know it. Furthermore if EE ever bit the dust, it would inherit even more viewers.

The Beeb's two showings of Neighbours get up to six million in daytime. Premiere it on the weeknight and repeat it the next day at lunchtime and thats easily going to average at least 9 million at night and probably 2 million at lunch. Give Grundy more cash to beef it up and even make it a three nightly show meaning the cast size and budget could increase and improve even more on the lean pickings it currently operates on and I'd choose it over EE, a show I have loved up until recently.

Obviously this suggests that the BBC making a much bigger investment in the Neighbours and having execs and storyliners down under.

I doubt the BBC would do that. Neighbours has pretty much made a name for itself as a teatime soap.

I agree with your sentiments, as Neighbours seems to be the only soap at the moment with faithful character development and stories that make you want to see what happens next.

I agree that the show would get very good ratings in a later slot, but doubt the BBC would do that, I think they've got all these rules on non-uk shows being on a prime time or something.

It's be great for it to happen just one time though, just to see what the ratings would be...

Neighbours is one of the best soaps on the TV, and way better than dreary-enders.

As jonparadise has said, it has good character development and gets the viewer gripped. I mean some of the storylines they've had recently have been top notch, and plus they handle the humourous side as well, such as this Bobby character sleeping with Susan, Lynn and that other woman.

What's EE given us in the past two years? Murder...gangsters...suicide...death..endless drawn-out storylines about brother/sister relationships, love triangles and other pointless stuff.

Neighbours has tackled the issues such as gambling with that Ruby woman, who I feel should have been given a BAFTA or a British Soap Award for her performances, as they were so convincing and outstanding. You could relate to the woman in a way.

Yes give it a prime-time shot, and get rid of EE once and for all.

EastEnders is a british soap that does well in the ratings so I'm sure the BBC would rather leave it where it is than risk a bad alteration of the schedule.

EE is only doing well, because of the fickle UK public's decision to watch such tripe..I mean there are loads of decent regional programmes on ITV such as the Central News debate thing on Tuesday at 7.30, which is enjoyable and interesting to watch...or they could read a book instead.

True, the UK TV audience is hugely habit based, and as a result, some TV shows can go on and on and on. (See Heartbeat and Last of the Summer Wine!).

Unfortunately, because of this, some producers get a little lazy, and also lose touch with the audience.

Neighbours is doing so well these days as a result of a few years ago when it was a laughing stock. The producers learnt from their mistakes.

It also took the show around 6 months to turn around from when the new producer took over a couple of years ago.

Even with new producers, EE seems to be taking an awfully long time to get better, with everyone pinning their hopes on it improving 'when *insert name* leaves'.

What I'm trying to say is EastEnders is a british soap opera that is doing well enough now for the BBC so they have no need to mess with their schedule. It really wouldn't be good for EastEnders so they'd be losing a 20 year old programme in the bargain because EastEnders just wouldn't survive if it wasn't in primetime. Part of the problem is the show being dumbed down and it would have to be dumbed down even more.

You don't like it then?

Your opinion, but an awful lot of people think it's great, and better than EE too.

Horses for courses.

I doubt it, Neighbours fan myself.

EE has done great episodes this year, but has then followed them with drivel. So I'm reserving judgement.

Fingers crossed though......
