Okay, so this is something I don't understand. Why do people WANT to know what is going to happen. I avoid spoilers on everything, from Lost to EastEnders; from books and movies. I paid over the odds for a copy of he latest Harry Potter book because I was in France at the time, and because I needed to read it quickly before I found out any spoilers (and they do get out accidentally).

So, why do you want to know what is ging to happen?

I don't want to know what happens- it's just this strange pulling factor which means I can't go past a thread with spoilers in without clicking on it.

But don't you find it spoils the actual programme when you know exactly what happens?

Like the current thing in EE - isn't it better to sit and watch it wondering if Chrissie will get caught, if Zoe will be dragged into things? Or perhaps will Kat go all maternal and get to Sam and beat her up. So many things could happen and I want to see it unfold as the programme continues.

Going back to the HP example, I always flick to the end of a book just to see the final page number. I avoid all text on the page except that. However with book 6 I saw just two words on the page

Spoiler

which for me completely ruined the whole book because I was waiting for it to happen.

I believe you created a thread which has spoilers too.

I love spoilers, although been pretty good with lost, have remained spoiler free so far.

Guess I am just weak. I do wish I could avoid spoilers at least for just one show to see what difference it would make though.

I think spoilers entice you into watching. When you reed '...and then this happens to so and so...' you're like "oh my god, I cant wait to see that..." Why do you think they go mad advertising the next big disaster in every soap. And even people that wouldn't normaly tune in have to watch. Just because you know it's going to happen actually watching it unfold is totally differant, IMO anyways!

I will purposely go on the internet and look for spoilers, i dont find it spoils the programme for me at all, I makes it easier to understand.
For example after i watched the first episode of lost, i went on the abc website and read the episode summaries for all the episodes in that season.........a week is just too long to wait!
And one of the first things i did when i got harry potter 6 was read the back page because i wanted to no wot happened!

1) I need to know
2) If it doesn't interest me I know when not to watch
3) I make an effort when I know it's gonna be a good episode.
4) For example knowing Ali was gonna die in H'oaks 2 weeks ago I paid more attention to the events leading to his death like the fight with Nicole and various other things.

I would prefer it if there were no spoilers. On occasions ive been spoiler free and ive enjoyed it a lot more then. However ive still enjoyed episodes a lot even when ive had spoilers.

I try not to read spoilers or episode summaries in great detail before the episode airs however sometimes I cant resist.

I rarely read episode guides or spoilers for Corrie - I deliberately try to avoid them, because I like surprises. I don't mind finding out a character is leaving, or arriving, but I don't want to know the details.

However I haven't minded reading them for Easties because it warns me which episodes to avoid (Lil Moo - Alfie - let me out of here )

But in general I agree there are too many spoilers, and they are leaked way too far in advance.

I read TV Guides and All About Soap but they only tell you so much. I like occasional surprises when I watch Corrie as well.

I bought All About Soap a couple of times but I thought it did reveal quite a bit about future episodes, so I don't tend to buy it now. The main spoilers I see are on here

some people can not help but click on it as has been said, by putting your own little spoiler in their you are being a total hypocrite.

An interesting article:
----------------------------

As spoilers have became more and more common in the soaps, the ratings have declined. Conincidence? I think not!

Look at the sorts of ratings Coronation Street, Emmerdale and Eastenders were getting around 8 years ago. For the first two it was well over the 12 million mark most episodes, and for Emmerdale it was well over ten. Now Emmerdale gets 6 - 8 million and Corrie/EE get 10m on a very good episode.

So what is different? What has changed? I know that a fair bit of this decline was caused by the digital age and Sky, cable and Freeview all becoming far more popular. But what else has changed in these eight or so years?

Inside Soap was still in its infancy back then and many of its predessors weren't even around, as were the big killers - the Sunday magazines. Almost every Sunday newspaper now has a supplement (aka: the curse of the newsagent). Each one of these has a rather large section covering the trials and tribulations of the residents of Walford, Weatherfield and of course Emmerdale. But could this rise in publicised storylines be causing the viewer to switch off rather than on?

PR is an extremely important aspect of every business, so why should the soaps be any different? They need their advertising revenues (in ITV's case anyway). But what happens if a viewer sees that their favourite character will not be appearing in any of next weeks episodes? Puts a dampner on things doesn't it? Will you really make that weeks installments from your favourite square, street or village a top priority if the best resident ain't residing their for that week?

Also another factor in the Great Soap Turn-Off could be over exposure on the star's parts. Jessie Wallace (also known as the "loveable" Kat Moon from Eastenders) regularly appears in the likes of Heat, OK and Hello with her turbulant love life taking centre stage, not her role in the show. But with appearences also in the Sunday newspapers (and sometimes the daily ones too!), do we really want to tune in just to see what her character gets up to this week if her own life seems far more interesting than anything Kat could do?

As the ratings continue to decrease, will the powers that be end up asking themselves the all important question - "Where did it all go wrong?".
