What Does BB Say about Britain???
Babygirl
19-06-2002
I am wondering what our choice in house mates says about britain as a whole. I read in The Mirror, at the beginning of the Big Bro craze, that more of the youth of britain vote for Big Bro than in the Election. This is no surprise. The article went on to say that the member of the house are a fair representation of the UK population.

If this is so what does our choice of winner say about our aspirations. I was confused when Craig won because he was lazy until he was nominated twice and had to confront Nasty Nick then he was vain and conceited talking about his conquests and how popular he must be. I put it down to the Nasty Nick confrontation and how it was portrayed and promoted by the show.

Then we had fun loving full of life Brian. He was not afraid to ride with his crazy moments, he was mostly honest and very caring and inoffensive to most. His nominations I put down to the isolation of the house and not being able to escape him. If you watch him presenting SMTV he is basically the same person (minus the demons).

Now we seem to be leaning towards Spencer. Lets take a look at Spencer. Funny at times, laid back to the point of unenthusiastic (and PJ said Lee made him feel Lathargic), his mood depends on how much alcohol and tabaco is available to him, He is sexually restrained (re: his rejection of kate when he over heard her talk about almost getting into a threesome), lets not talk about the showering and feet.
Aside from his good looks I am struggling to find what we find in him that makes us want to make him our champion.

Enlighten me please.

He's the best looking in there. That's all.
That apparently excuses him being a dirty lazy slob
Seems to me it tells me that women in Britain STILL don't know what they want in a man

When I see some of the ill-considered bilge that passes for "argument" in these forums (including the shite that is the official site) it scares the shit out of me.

Er, what do you mean by "our choice of housmates"? I didn't chose any of these immature morons.

Now, ok I know everyone has their own tastes, but when presented with a clean, Armani model against a smelly (apparantly a fact), lazy guy who is good looking with athletes foot, why do people choose the latter? Ok, each to their own, but it shows that people are slobs (right word?). I definitly think that the house represents modern Britain. Although the relationships and characters in the house seem extreme, its only because the tv exaggerates them and highlights their key features. I guess this is what we're really like, and most people fit into one of the categories portrayed by each house member

And Im not at all suprised that more people voted for big brother than in the general election considering that under 18's are not allowed to vote in the election and in big brother everyone can vote (and, they can vote as many times as they like)

The collection of housemates this year is as far as is possible to get away from a realistic representaion of young people in Britain.

The only housemates that are not dumb TV wannabees are Adele, Spencer, Sandy. I can believe that people like these three do exist. As for the others? Well, Sophie, Alex and Tim could all be the same person. If they represent anyone it is a tiny minority in this country, people who live outside of real life and communicate in a bizarre degeneration of the English language that seems popular in London nowadays. Kate, Jade, PJ and Johnny...surely they should return to the nursery from where they came. They are not adults, Lee and Alison can join them. They are in their twenties, why do they talk like twelve-year-olds? Kate cannot be true, she must be an actor.

Essentially Big Brother contestants are chosen carefully by the producers to ensure that they lack intelligence, they lack maturity and that they give the expression that young people in Britain are backward. And there are always plenty of those modern Londeners who have mutilated the English language to make it sound as if Buffy's writers compiled the OED.

Plus, Sophie and Alex seem to think that lager is beer!!??

What is Lager then, if it isn't beer?

As far as I know, lager is a type of beer.

Plus I think it is terrible that the people of Britain want to choose someone like Spencer to represent them. Alex deserves to stay. And hopefully he will...

The beauty of the English language is how its dynamic and changing and picking up new phrases and words all the time.
In fact it's so 'pukka' because it loots and borrows and adapts from so many other languages and cultures.
And who the hell are 'Londeners' - surely that can't be classical English ?

Torque,
someone who calls themselves "epicurus" is unlikely to consider Lager "real" beer.

I just moved to the UK recently:

When I was in high school there was an ongoing joke that you could always tell the Englishman because he was the one that got out of the shower ot pee...

Big Brother 3 has confirmed the stereoptye.... get over your selves,,, its a game show....

Or to put it another way, when faced with the choice of a socially inept vain self absorbed shallow guy, and a down to earth, witty, intellegent, cool, rebelious, caring, deep thinking, bloke people choose the latter?

Regardless of looks (33 y/o straight male typing here), Spencer is a much more interesting personality and I can certainly prefer him over Alex, and in fact, over most of the judgemental, easily missinformed posters on these forums.

OK, so Spencer has a BO problem. Since he's had hardly a single change of clothes having been kept in the poor side for nearly 2 weeks, he's suffered with althlets foot (which he explained was connected with his work in a wet environment), tend to sleep during the day but awake at night, and his sense of humour seems to go over the heads of some people he's villified? I think THAT is the sad inditement of our society!

Worst of all I find are those people who have strong feelings of hate towards to housemates when they only see the few edited minutes. I find it deeply disturbing that people can feel comfortable expressing opinions of real hate in these circumstances.

*ponders to self how come I keep writing to defend Spencer when I don't really care who wins - guess I just don't like people misrepresenting the trueth and claiming it as fact, or expressing opinions as absolute and undeniable*

Thank you for your post Fan-at-tic, but as the originator of this thread I would just like to say; I read an article and wanted to gauge other opinions on the matter. A it was my thread it is only natural that my opinion would be reflected in it. I hoped that opinions both for and against would be expressed and they were.

I enjoyed your post and hope you learn to appreciate the insight gained from differing opinions. Don't get angry educated. Whether you watch 20 hours or 20 mins a day, what people percieve from what they have seen is always different. That is what makes visiting these forums interesting.

Enjoy

I agree completely...what tends to lead me to rant a little is when I read opinions expressed without reasons though....and any extreem feelings I find hard to comprehend and hence try to counter the statements with reasoned arguments.

I was misled by the title of the thread as being a serious question about what BB said about Britain, and hence the one sided view expressed of "choosing Spencer over Alex means Britain is awful" seemed in need of some balance

Oh I see, I know that a vote for Spencer is not a reflection of ones personality. My best friend loves spencer and was gutted at his eviction. We agree to disagree and have had some interesting discussions and revelations come as a result of our big brother debates.
