Watching Emmerdale today i was thinking about this,I have thought about it before but never posted anything about it.

Today Emmerdale was on air for about 4 mins before going in to a very very long ad break and normally day in day out each soap gets a 10 min break,So thats 20 minutes of writing not 25 or 30.

Then last week i looked at the clock and Eastenders started right on 8 and finshed at 8:31 so that was 31 minutes of writing

It would make a differance to the qualtiy of a soap were the ad break is. I don't really mine, I usually use the break to grab a bit to eat or a drink.

I don't quite see your point, how would the lack of ad breaks affect the quality? It's still the same scenes! The episodes would just be as long Neighbours, that's all.

It was hardly only 12 minutes long!

All it means is that with 5/6 episodes a week, the amount of screentime isn't THAT much more than what Eastenders has (which is not, by the way, an excuse to keep on with so many episodes).

Maximum Amount in Any One Hour
In any one clock hour there must be no more than 12 minutes of advertising spots and/or teleshopping spots. (See Section 8 for teleshopping windows.)OFCOM rules

So I think it's doubtful that Emmerdale was only on for twelve minutes, otherwise ITV will be getting a huge fine and a slapped wrist!

but whats the point of watching a soap if you don't get to see the adverts in between - how do you know if they are gonna show you a product that could change the way you live your life as you know it?

you should think about these things before you post - think of all the redundancies it would cause the ad agencies to make. and it would be a shame to see the UK's most dynamic young minds out of a job and wandering the streets with nothing but a last seasons Armani trouser suit to call their own - bars would shut down due to the fall in brunch and after work drinks - out of work actors would be out of bar work in between acting jobs and would be forced into sensible well paying accountiong jobs and before you know it the soaps have nobody to employ and they are gone - then I'll have to nothing to watch on cold winter nights and wil be forced to make friends with real live people outside my tellybox - I'm gonna stop now but all I'm saying is that if ads were cancelled then someone could possibly die.

you should think on that.

ITV's soaps are about 22-23 mins long excluding ads.

Put it this way - without ad breaks I would watch them!

Even with sky+ I can flick the ads away in seconds, but its still a hassle as you find yourself waiting for the ads, remote ready. Some things are just not worth the extra hassle.

damn MTV it has given us a generation of impatient idiots incapable of sitting tight in their chair - if you are that impatient may I recomend taking a turn around your couch in the vain hope of making the three to five minutes pass a little faster

The thing is most TV ads during soaps tend to be for the likes of ladies toiletries, shampoo, tampons, face cream, hair dye etc etc, what good is that to the male population of soap viewers?? And i cant say ive ever been enticed into buying something from a TV ad, im much more inclined to take note of a magazine advert cos you can read it or pass it. These adverts are one of the main reasons i never watch ITV soaps, 5 mins into corrie you get an ad, its so infuriating...
