Most Underrated british singers?
Who are the most underrated british singers
Who is very talented but rarely or never doase well in the charts? My votes go to- Nate James-very talented and original but album only just scraped top 100! Beverly Knight-One of the best voices in the world in my opinion but singles rarely enter top 20

Mike Patto. Very powerful British rock vocalist of the late '60s/'70s, who sounded at times like an out-of-control Paul Rodgers (Free) or a pent-up, enraged Rod Stewart.
Sadly, the luck did not swing Mr Patto's way in life, and his talent was destined to remain underappreciated. He died of cancer some years ago. Look for his work with the bands Timebox, Patto and Boxer. He really was terribly, terribly good. (And so were guitarist Ollie Halsall and drummer John Halsey, the other stars of the Patto band.) |

Lewis Taylor. Appeared from nowhere (ie the Edgar Broughton Band), made a handful of albums that don't fit into any known genre - psychedelic soul meets the Beach Boys, maybe? - and disappeared again. Brilliant vocalist and guitarist.

Beth Orton - great voice, great songs, but never seems to attract much attention.

But being in the chart doesn't necessarily mean quality.
You sought out these artists or heard them somewhere and appreciated them. The stuff that's in the charts comes and goes with current trends. The quality stuff is what you listen to at home on a personal level. We may be influenced by something we hear on the radio or tv - but it may be just once and off you go to seek out an album. I will say one male and one female. Though they're both well known they always seem to skirt round the edge. Male - Mark Owen - yes I know he's been up there but what he does now just gets compared to more successful people but I love all 3 of his albums. Female - Kirsty MacColl. Doesn't fit the mold for a pop girlie. Fantastic songwriter. Seemed to have great insight into what she did too. And now she's gone. |

Marc Almond. Everyone remembers his tremulous, slightly wonky singing in the early Soft Cell hits but since then he's got better and better and is very much appreciated as a singer, well, anywhere but here. I think he's our top UK diva!

I'm another waving the flag for Beverley. She gets a lot of critical acclaim, so isn't under-rated in that respect, but she can't seem to cross-over into the main-stream. She produces fantastic music and is an amazing performer, so I just cannot fathom what else it is she could do to get the recognition long over-due to her. The only thing that could be said about her is that she isn't very 'exciting'. I don't mean that in a nasty way, because I do think she's an interesting individual, but she's not exciting in a tabloid kind-of way and no matter how talented you are, these days you need to have The Sun behind you and The Sun like sensational stories.

I'm another in thinking that Beverly Knight is underrated. I had the pleasure of seeing her live recently and all I can say is WOW. I've never in my life seen anyone perform live like this woman does. She has the talent, no doubt about that but she's not as sucessful in terms of sales and chart positions most probably because you don't see her in the papers, arse and boobs out with different men etc etc...

I saw Beverley perform live at the Notting Hill Carnival a few years ago and thought she was amazing, but never used to feel her recorded material did her justice, and used to think she was under-marketed. Looks like maybe that's all starting to change. You want to see something exciting? Check out Beverley's video of 'Come As You Are' here. Words fail me... that video really rocks! It's too cool for words. Looking at that, if she wanted to diversify more from R&B she's got huge crossover potential.

Neil Hannon. His songs are some of the most well crafted around.
Bugger - he's Irish. Oh, well. Close enough! |

Greg Gilbert from Delays has an amazing voice, so high.
I know Tom Chaplin isn't particularly underrated, but I hear so much stick about him from everyone I know, I just think his voice is incredible, and not *in the slightest * bit moaning.
