Coronation Street beat EastEnders and Emmerdale to win best soap at the TV Quick and TV Choice Awards.

But Emmerdale, so often overshadowed by its two big rivals, also celebrated a double victory.

Also

Emma Atkins, who plays Charity Tate, was crowned best soap actress, beating Coronation Street's Kate Ford (Tracy Barlow) and June Brown (Dot Branning) from EastEnders.

Charity's ruined wedding day won the title of best soap storyline, ahead of Maya's revenge in Coronation Street and the Sharon, Dennis and Zoe love triangle in EastEnders.

Shane Richie won best soap actor for playing Alfie Moon in EastEnders.

Lacey Turner, who plays Albert Square bad girl Stacey Slater, was named best soap newcomer.

The awards, held at the Dorchester Hotel on London's Park Lane, were voted by readers of TV Quick and TV Choice.

Emmerdale deserved to win best soap but because it's not one of the top soaps it never gets it

Emmerdale has been better but it's always overlooked for that category.

I love all the comedy in Corrie that people have been complaining about I think it's worked well with a quiet patch and kept the episodes enjoyable but it's not been top quality soap like Emmerdale has.

What do you expect? None of the other soaps matter in any of these soap awards apart from the big 3

Corrie and EastEnders only seem to matter at awards Safra. Look at the soap awards, Emmerdale only got one gong and it deserved atleast another two or three gongs.

So I don't even think that poor Emmerdale gets much of a look in.

Does anyone really care about these two-bit magazine soap awards? There are so many of them these days that they're rapidly becoming totally meaningless.

I agree. I only really pay attention to the British Soap Awards but at times even they are a farce.

To my mind the most prestigious award ever to be won by a soap was The South Bank Show award for Best Drama which went to Corrie this year. I bet the people at Corrie were delighted about that. I don't think a soap has ever even been nominated before.
