Do DVD recorders allow you to record from your old video's onto DVD. Do you connect it via. scart.

I.e. is it possible to transfer your old VHS tapes to DVD?

Yes and yes, As long as the videos you want to copy are not copy protected, IE Macrovision but there are ways round that which we cant speak of on here.

The DVD Recorder that I am going to buy is only a DVD recorder - how would i go about connecting my VCR to it so it can record from the Video to the DVD?

Simple, By scart lead, One from the vcr to the dvd recorder and another one from the dvd recorder to the tv so you can see what you are doing.

2 scarts on the DVD recorder is the key to this.

Remember that many models will have just one bi-directional scart, and 1 SCART input socket. Use the the first for the tv hook up. Use the 2nd for plugging the VCR into. You will need to press play on the VCR and Record on the DVD. Remember that on the DVD recorder, you will need to "select" the scart input on the remote with a button like "AV in" or similar - refer to the manual.

Hi there,
I'm a new member in desperate need of help.
My Sony dvd r GX350 will not pick up my 'old' samsung VCR when i switch the DVDR on. As soon as i turn the DVD recorder off i can watch the VCR no problem. I have tried all sorts of permutations and nothing.
Set up:
Sky box to DVDR (scart)
DVDR to TV (scart)
VCR to Sky box (scart)
RF to DVDR Then DVDR to TV

p.s I have tried this Rifleman19's way and the result is the same.

Thanking you in advance

Does a sky box loop through a VCR?

Connect the vcr to the dvd recorder not the sky box.

Your set up is correct.

The VCR can loop through the Sky box into the DVDR with the scarts you have.

If you can see the Sky box on the TV when the DVDR is both ON or OFF (which i guess you can or you would have said this in your post) then I think the problem is this............

You have the scarts from the Sky box the wrong way around.

The scart from the VCR MUST go into the VCR scart (the TOP one) as this scart socket is bi-directional and is designed for sending and receiving a signal to/from a VCR, hence the name).

The scart to the DVDR from Sky can be either but, SHOULD be the TV scart (the bottom one) as this sends a better (RGB) signal to the DVD or TV for recording/watching. Also this scart is only UNI-directional which is why you cant see the VCR!

Give this a try.

Thanks for the advice Scorpio etc but i have re-checked my set up and everything is correct. When i switch the DVDR on it does not recognise the VCR, when i turn the DVDR off the VCR plays thru the TV as normal.
When i connect the VCR direct to the DVDR (line 1 decoder input) and then the DVDR to the TV the same result occurs.
Does this problem have anything to do with aerial connections and tuning the DVDR specificlly for the VCR?
Any further help would be greatly appreciated.

when you say the DVDR does not 'recognise' the VCR it sounds like you are trying to 'tune the VCR to the DVDR - dont!

Use the direct connection you described BUT you must set the DVDr to 'channel' L1 rather than a 'normal' channel.

The RF cables should be like this

Ext aerial ---> VCR RF in
VCR RF out ---> DVDR RF in
DVDR RF out ---> TV RF in

No need to go via Sky box unless you are using RF 2 on the Sky box to route RF signals to other TVs in the house.

Thanks Scorpio,
I have just done as you suggested but still no joy.
I took Sky out of the equation completely - same result.
The TV switches between units no problem. Perhaps the Sony cannot do this!!

Have you selected either Video or RGB in the Line 1 settings?
Initial setup-Video in/out-Line 1 in.
Page 80 of the manual.

I also have a old Sony TV and the scart switching does something similar. Sometimes I can get the right device displayed but it doesn't sync up as if it's getting sync from some other source! Basically SCART auto switching sucks.

Yes, when the Sky box is connected it is set to decoder. When the VCR was connected up i tried RGB and video......no good.

OK back to basics...............with the line 1 in set to video, connect up the sky box and set the ouptput to RGB.

If you can see Sky on the TV with the DVDR in BOTH standby and ON (with input set to line 1) then change the Sky setting to VIDEO not RGB. This will send a composite picture to the DVDR.

Again, check that the Sky picture is visible with DVDR in both standby and ON.

The above will prove that a composite signal can be routed through the DVDR.

If this is OK then just swap the VCR for the Sky box and try to play a tape and see the output on the TV - haha, this should now work!

If not.......................

Scorpio,
Many thanks. You are a bloody genius. The VCR pictures are pretty damn good. I supppose all i have to do is swap back to the Sky scart when i have finished archiving and change back to RGB. It's a shame everything could'nt be connected together but hey, who am i to complain. I wish Sony could explain things like you.
Once again, merci.

I seem to be getting slight interference (not all the time) when i play the VCR thru the DVDR to record.
Any thoughts?
Thanks again,

May be an RF issue - dont bother to put the aerial cable via the VCR as your not recording there any more, you dont need it.

On the other (original) you can connect the VCR and Sky box back together now, the issue (we now know) is the RGB/composite video setting on the AV2 socket of the DVDR. If you set it to RGB you will be able to see/record Sky to DVDR in RGB quality.

When you need to copy from VCR to DVDR just change the setting back to composite.
