I think he was a bit embarassed by what he heard from the other three. He didnt actually slag her off at all himself. I think he was worried she'd overhear and be upset

I agree with you. Alex seemed genuinely surprised, and also said matter of a factly that he didn't really have any problems with the girl (Sophie). No more than I would expect from him
