Just seen the clip (at last)
As I suspected, it looks as though it was caused by the transmission delay.
When they use delayed transmission (so they can edit out anything 'dodgy') they need to 'jump' forwards to regain the buffer after they remove something.
They do it all the time on radio phone-ins, usually playing a jingle while the time is regained.
It's probably nothing more than a bit of clumsy editing.

But... this was in the part of the show that was pre-recorded. The 10 -12 minute slot at the beginning where they showed you what happened in the last 24 hours. Those events actually happened on Thursday night.

The delay wasn't applicable to that part of the show (except possibly for delaying the whole show so that the "live" bits could be delayed).

Like I said previously, I've looked at it very closely many times using the pretty good quality you get from a TiVo recording at best quiality - the right hand side of the screen changes noticeably both in Alex disappearing and in sublte lighting changes. The left doesn't jump at all.

It could have been one of the editors fooling around - and then inserting it by mistake into the transmission tape... Whatever - it was quite creepy the first time I saw it!
