Quick question. If you use your mobile as a modem for a laptop. How much do you get charged? Not sure if you get charged call rates or data rates.
Thanks.

If you make a GSM data call then you're charged at whatever the voice rate for such a call would be. If you use GPRS or 3G data then the charge depends on how much data you transfer - outside of any 'inclusive' data in your particular tariff, you can be looking at a per meg charge from as low as 80p to as high as £7.50.

Except Orange who charge 10p per minute for data calls on their Your Plan / Off peak tariffs. Got stung for £40 on that one!!

General advise, just do not use your mobile for data unless you REALLY have to. The word ripoff does not come close to what they all charge.

All that 3G capacitiy should bring prices down for data pretty soon.

Vodafone have just launched a 1GB bundle for £45/month - less than 50p a meg, so things are heading in the right direction.

Thats good news, did Vodafone used to have a Pack for Internet Access or was that only for Vodafone Live! before it came free?

Same goes for global roaming - beyond rip-off and into out and out scam territory.

O2 - GPRS or 3G

Standard price per mb (if you do not have a data bolton) is £2.35

Data Boltons available to bring the charges down.
i.e 5mb £8 per month (+VAT) then any overage charged at £1 per mb.

Dialup - Not recommended, and i carnt remember the price but its not cheap.

Try to resist using GPRS abroad.

You will be charged daily for the Access Point and it will end up costing an arm and a leg. Then you will be charged for the data downloaded.

Whilst on the subject of foriegn calls. If you do travel abroad and are on o2 and dont need your 901 answering machine service turn it off! (1760 off 1750 on).

You will be charged for the person to call the country you are in, then charged to have that call routed back to UK. If you listen to it you would then be charged a 3rd time.

If you do not have ITS even in France it would cost you over £1.50 just for the person to leave the meassage per min, not mentioning the call charge for you to listen to it.
