The characters in themselves are fine, i think, but they don't seem (with few exceptions) to genuinely *care* for each other.
So, to answer your question:
Friendly interaction is missing. ”
Precisely. [when Jack is "sober" he posts good stuff]
It's not only the absence of the weekly must-be-practised tasks. The divide also means that the discussions about how much to bet on the tasks are gone; the 400 or nothing food budget means that group debate over what food to get is gone (since 100stl a person means everybody gets what they want no questions asked). The HMs never are forced to work together as a team.
After one feeble attempt to initiate a discussion on childhood, BB gave up trying to get the HMs to reflect on themselves. So what's left - pointless Survivor-esque plotting. Some of this is fun to watch. Weeks of it aren't.
I've been accused of over-romanticising past BBs, but in last years one sensed that a core group really learned to like each other over time. Even Dean and Elizabeth who didn't like Paul, not only didn't throw hissy fits, like Kate, but grudgingly began to listen to him. I can't imagine this development happening at all this year.
Last year's HMs also taught each other things. I wasn't really that much of a Brian fan, but I loved his face that showed how proud he was at Elizabeth learning the airsteward drill.
I think that the problem this year is partly structural (although I do think the HMs are weaker).
In the third season, we now get HMs who go into it to boot-start media careers, and just play themselves to the cameras. [There's an interesting discussion on another thread of how Johnny may've studied the way to act in the house].
In the future, they really need to prohibit anyone who's been on a reality show before or had an agent, at any time.
