Flaws in E4's censorship
Jason C
24-06-2002
You surely can't have failed to notice that E4 have been at pains to justify the sound cuts to their coverage by displaying a host of apology captions and even creating a page on the official BB website to fully explain why cuts are necessary.

The problem that many people point out though, is the really shoddy way that it's done, with whole conversation chunks being edited out.

The other problems relate to the fact that different editors consider different things censorable; for instance, it isn't uncommon to see one conversation dipped on Feed A and still be heard on Feed B.

Also, really obvious things to be edited out aren't; for instance, pieces of conversation that can't be transmitted are those which invade the privacy of people not in the BB house, or those which defame businesses or companies.

Why, then, was Alex comment a few minutes ago about his former headteacher Mr Parfitt being an 'arsehole' left in?

Why was the sound left up when the housemates sat around the outside table slagging off a hairdressing chain?

Why was Spencer seen carrying a coal bag adorning the name 'The Real Fire Fuel Company' after uttering the words 'shit coal'?

Don't get me wrong, I'd love to have it completely uncensored, but considering the coverage is on a ten minute (or more) delay, and you have at least two producers watching the coverage for exactly this thing, it just smacks of laziness, frankly.

Either do the job right, or not at all.

(If you have any more examples of things that should've been edited out but weren't, feel free to list them.)

Somebody told me that they can't skip back through footage that's already passed their eyes - the reason why they don't just bleep out single words but rather hit a button that'll cut out 3 seconds prior and 3 seconds after when they think they hear something naughty. IF this is the case.. through all the time they are watching, probability is some things will slip through the net...

I would guess that there are probably atleast two people monitoring it, incase the first one misses something.

I would guess that they may not be able to go back to edit something once it's passed them live but they should be able to stop it as it passes again going out to the publc on the delay?

Also did anyone notice yesterday on BBLB supposedly live at 7pm, that when spencer swore it was cut? Live, me don't think so?

shit, sorry. So it was on at 1.30 then? I'm getting confused as they keep moving it's time on a Sunday, and also sometimes it's on a Friday and sometimes not. Apologies.

no probs, im as equally confused about the whole BBLB thing as you are. Last year it was a set time, now sometimes its on Fridays, sometimes its not. Sometimes its on midday'ish on Sunday and others its only on at 7pm on Sunday.
