U2.

From a dynamic early 80s rock band (they recorded Boy when they were like 18).. to the War album (the first major hits), the Unforgettable Fire, The Joshua Tree (which still blows my mind to this day that they wrote that album when they were around 25 years old), the best and most innovative rock tour in history (ZooTV), the best album of the 90s in my view (Achtung Baby), the dance influenced underrated album Pop, right through to All That You Cant Leave Behind, which meant so much more after September 11th. The Beatles may be better, but when U2 call it a day they will be ranked alongside them.

Saw U2 four times last year (including at Slane Castle), simply incredible. I saw Bono run around singing his heart out entertaining the crowd at Earls Court on the day his father died. No other person in the music industry would have taken to the stage if their father had died. That man is a legend.

I think if you are going to try to name a band that the best of all time then you have to pick a band thats either been around for quite a few years or a band that split up years ago but whos music stands the test of time.

My vote would go to Led Zeppelin

Good choice too. Jimmy Page is a genius.

Hard to bet the Zeppelin mob. Unbeatable, esp. when compared to jonny-come-latelys like REM [dull], U2 [pretentious knob-ends] & a boat load of other would-bes-but-never-really-were.

The Byrds - in all their incarnations.

They were there at the start of folk rock, country rock and psychadelic rock.

Without the Byrds chances are the whole alt.country scene would not be here today.

QUEEN!!!!

On a simple level.... it sounds wonderful and the delight of 'Live and Wembley' is uplifting and is wonderfully anti-depressant.

On the level of someone who did A-Level music..... Brian May is a genius... the writing of the harmonies in Who Wants to Live Forever... the wonderful fine points of Innuendo (including almost inaudible bass articulation).. genius. That Fred bloke wasn't a bad singer either. (Note to all Queen fans - buy the new release of the Tribute Concert on DVD (oddly Asda seems the cheapest!!) - is well worth it).

I gotta go with Led Zeppelin too, the most incredible mixture of musicians this planet has ever seen. For me they define 'hard rock', with a hint of the blues! I would like to be able to fit a Hendrix band in there somewhere to, lets face it both The Experience and The Band of Gypsys were amazing... but more to do with Hendrix (or 'God' as some of us call him ) himself than anything else. So best band = Led Zeppelin and best artist = Jimi Hendrix . Another choice for best band for me would be Nirvana (go on, hit me with the "they were a bunch of sweaty men and he blew his brains out coz he realised how crap they were" line... some poor miss-guided and ignorant idiot always comes out with that one). Nirvana were and stilll are one of the greatest bands of all time - ground breaking, boundary pushing, inspirational, hard hitting rock, and before you ask no I don't go round in flannel shirts and ripped jeans, I just listen to and enjoy the fantastic music the guys left us with

Gotta agree with you there dan, I queued for 5 hours to get tickets for the surprise glasgow date, nearly loosing a job in the process and it was worth every minute. u2 is probably the only band of recent times that has a level of sucess comparable with led zep/the stones/the beatles.

I don't think that a band with only two albums can be counted. There are many bands who make a promising start with a couple of brilliant albums, but simply don't have the longeitivity of R.E.M. or U2 or the sheer influence of Led Zeppelin. This is why I wouldn't suggest, say Jeff Buckley as the best solo artist of all time, because who knows if he could have continued to make music up to the quality of Grace.

I'd say U2. I saw them at Cologne Arena last year and it was superb. But I would say Roger Waters is my favourite artist, he puts on a superb show. I saw him last saturday in Manchester, great night.

I'd say Led Zeppelin, as they had the biggest influence on my musical tastes, and are still a great influence on a great many bands today. The way they could belt out rock, sing beautiful blues, moving lyrics, and shock horror (when it first came out) reggae! To me their music had a sort of mystical quality. Robert Plants vocals are amazing, and Jimmy Page is awsome.
John Bonham had a reputation for hitting his drum kits harder than any of his contempories.

*reaches for "No Quarter" .........bliss*
