010 was the international code until 1995 when 00 and 000 was introduced.

000 was the international access code for accessing international satellite phones. This was coverted to 00.

07889 was previously used by O2 and was awarded to Vodafone by Oftel. This is due to increased usage of mobile phones at the time and vodafone needed more numbers whilst O2 has too many dormant number ranges.

It is to be believed that 07710 is currently not being used, is this true?

07840 has been used by O2 for Tesco Mobile

The original poster is quite correct.

There are issues with respect to some numbers as listed reporting incorrect CLi.

And in 1996, they added the '1' (as in 0'1'81, 0'1'452 etc) to the local dialling codes, in case anyone cares.

....and from June 2006, London (both Inner & Outer) will also have the code 020 3, as well as the current codes 020 7 (Inner London) & 020 8 (Outer London).

So, as Dawson has already asked, what is the source of this information?

Because without a source, this thread just looks like a rather pointless excuse to post old telephone codes!

000 was the international ISDN access code for data calls and that satellite phones on systems such as immasat were access through their + 87x or 00 87x numbers.

The addition of the 1 after the trunk access code happened In April 1995, the 16th if I recall.

07710 is being used by O2, as mentioned it used to be 0410 before 'The Big Number'

Does anyone really care though?

You are all missing the point, quite funny really.

Its not a post marvelling, or quoting the historical changeover dates as you all seem to think.

Its a post suggesting that if you own one of the numbers above and call someone, instead of the new number being shown (either on screen or via 1471), the old number is shown due to a fault which only occurs with some numbers, caused by a database error.

Its a valid post bearing in mind its an inconsistent error which may not be noticed for some time and doesnt affect all of the numbers listed, but which if you have this fault, would prevent someone calling you back via 1471 or missed calls list as the number would be incorrectly shown.

This problem is most likely to happen to mobile customers and non-BT line users such as NTL and Telewest.

I also heard that the old london area code: 0171 was working until 2001 via a service called Thus. is this true or what?

I have one of the mobile number prefixes quoted above.

When I phone either a BT Landline or another mobile it displays the correct, current prefix, not the old prefix.

I guess I'm one of those not affected.

Is there anyone here who is affected?

However, if I try to call myself on my mobile using the old prefix, it shows up as my name (my name is in the telephone directory on the phone), so I guess if anyone does phone where their cli is the old prefix, it will still identify them from the phonebook (provided they are in there)

I have had several problems,

I have an O2 sim card which used to be 0402, that number appeared on someones mobile when I called them and they said that the number that appeared on their phone started 0402 and wouldn't work.

Secondly, with my recent orange number begining 07891, in July 2004, this number was only accessable via BT lines as other companies had not updated their databases.

When I called out with this 07891 number the CLI was +2222222222

07974 is Vodafone and 07973 and 07979 are orange.

07891 was the number orange gave me when I registered in july 2004, they admitted that there has been a problem with CLI.

According to Oftel, the codes are assigned to the following operators (i.e. before any porting)

07970::V:fm4:::Mobile Services:::Orange::10:
07971::V:fm4:::Mobile Services:::Orange::10:
07973::V:fm4:::Mobile Services:::Orange::10:

When Oftel introduced 'The Big Number' in 1999, I thought it was a good idea to change the above codes as they were confusing! You didn't know if you were dialling a premium rate,national or freephone number!

0321 was Vodafones freephone number and is now 08080
0891 was a premium rate number
0990 was national rate now 08705
01459 was paging number now 07659

How confusing was this?????

Cable and Wireless/Mercury still use the 0500 freephone code, I think this should have been withdrawn and changed to an 0808 number. Cable and wireless also uses 0800-096 ect... so why use different codes? Numbers starting with 05 are also used for broadband Voice by BT and various other companies and most aren't able to accept incomming calls, so don't attempt to call them back if it is listed on 1471.

And lastly,
0700 numbers should be banned as these companies who own them are ripping consumers off by charging high rates. One company called Xero9 was reported to of been calling mobiles and hanging up before anyone answers, one of their numbers starting 070 will be displayed on the persons miss call status and then the person will probably call the number back and pay a couple of pounds for 1 minute call!

O2 has barred calls to Xero9's numbers starting 070968 and orange charges up to 50p per minute, any service providers charging more than this are also barred by orange.
