Thomson DHD400 yellow light of Death

After researching on this site I took the plunge and purchased one of the above from Homecinematv.co.uk.
Very pleased with service of the above company and the size of the PVR but on switching on straight out of the box, the unit flashes its yellow light as the hard drive appears to run up and then it remains steadily yellow.
No amount of pressing either the ON switch or STB switch on the remote or the ON switch on the front panel will get the unit on. The LED never glows red.
Is this unit likely to be duff or is there any hard reset or combination of keys that may encourage it to start? or is this a sign of a lose connection on the inside, bearing in mind its been through a courier to get to me?
any suggestions gratefully received...

You should get it replaced by the retailer - it shouldn't do this out of the box. There's a chance it could be faulty return which you've been supplied with.

There is a way to get some Thomson PVRs back from a YLD, but all successes have been on machines previously working.

It's got the symptoms of a faulty hard disk. It could just be a cable shaken loose in transit, but it could be more serious. Taking the thing apart to find out will invalidate the warranty. I agree with Musukebba - send it back.

Thanks for the advice, have spoken with Homecinematv.co.uk this morning and they will be sending a replacement and picking up the faulty unit next Saturday.
To be fair to them, they have been very helpful.

Thanks once again for kind advice, new unit arrived via courier on Saturday and what a top piece of kit it is. Very impressed with Homecinematv.co.uk, arranging replacement was a breeze.

Glad to hear it. It is a nice little unit - I've even got used to the looks now

Hi,

I've had one for a few months and it's a good little box. It can get temperamental though if you try using forward and rewind a bit too quickly. You'll need to power off and on again and, if you're midway through recording something you'll lose it. But go gentle and it'll be OK.

Oh, and the Thomson helpline (number in the instruction book) is REALLY helpful. They answer quick and usually solve stuff quickly or recommend getting replacements.

A couple of members have reported that Thomson insiders have told them there is already in existence a software update which fixes YLDs and rewind problems, among other things. It is reportedly supposed to be broadcast before the end of the year. See the main Thomson threads:
